I stayed in Duntulm Castle Hotel for a week in September of 2002, when the hotel was still running guided walking holidays for groups. The overall experience was awesome. The condition of the hotel was then a bit of a disappointment for some. Personally, I had a reasonably good experience. I had a room in the annex--for some reason I got an ensuite room, though I had paid only for a room with a shared bath down the hall. The room was small but nice. I had a television that worked fine; the shower was great--plenty of hot water; the bed was extremely comfortable--hard, I like them hard. It seemed to be a newish bed. Big window. When I found no hairdryer as promised, the manager (I believe) lent me hers for the week. The meals were not haute cusine but extremely good, and the service friendly and accommodating. I will say that others on my guided walking holiday, with rooms in the main building, seemed to have a wide variety of complaints about their rooms. Perhaps in four years some of these issues have been resolved. My major complaint about the facuility was that smoking was allowed in the public rooms (though not the dining room) and I could tell when somone was smoking in the sleepng room next to mine--there must have been some seepage. At least I learned always to book a non-smoking facility in Scotland, though a recent change in smoking laws may have resolved this problem anyway. Though it does not look like much from the picture of the hotel, the surrounding landscape is magnificent--as are the views of the water from the hotel. See attached photos.
