After reading the mixed reviews on Trip Advisor, it was with a bit of trepidation , given the tariff , that we booked for 2 nights.
We have found that dealing directly with Hotels in Scotland can mean long , frustrating delays before confirmation, but not with Three Chimneys - not only were they prompt with their response, but the Promotional package we received in the mail was impressive, given its quality and the fact that it was posted to Australia.
On the day of arrival by ferry from Tarbert, Isle of Lewis, the weather was awful, so we arrived 2 hours early, and although the room was not ready, we were welcomed warmly and given afternoon tea - (Yes we did phone in advance to let them know of our situation). As expressed by other correspondents, the room was large, well appointed and extremely comfortable, which was a godsend given the weather. Whilst we did not avail ourselves of the service, the library of books and DVD's is a great idea.
We dined both evenings in the restaurant, and the food was as we expected - superb examples of modern Scottish cuisine and the service was attentive and assured. We also like the fact that all the staff were in smart uniforms. Special compliments to the young lady wine waiter, who after making one recommendation that we accepted, came back with another suggestion, after she had further reflected on our menu selections - top marks.
I agree with the correspondent who thought the breakfast room lacked atmosphere and warmth, but this was more than made up for, by the sweet lady who served us each morning. The only criticism would be that the porridge was of the microwave stodgy variety, but everything else was of high quality.
Yes, Three Chimneys is expensive, especially when we have to convert the strong Pound into Aussie Dollars, but given the remoteness of the location, the attention to detail in both the rooms and the restaurant , and the extremely friendly service by the group of young ladies in reception, I would recommend this establishment unreservedly.

Dear MadamJosephine,

Everyone here has asked me to send you their thanks for your review of your stay here, your experience in the restaurant, our food and service. It is a great review and we are all delighted that you took the time to write it.

We remember your early arrival that day very well and are pleased that you did not have to wait very long before you were able to check-in to your room in The House Over-By.

Generally speaking, the Isle of Skye and the west coast of Scotland has had wonderful summer weather this year, compared with other parts of the UK. I am sorry if it was not so good while you were here and perhaps this spoiled the beautiful outlook from the picture windows in the morning room where you were served breakfast? The morning room is a large, spacious room with high ceilings and we arrange all the tables to give our guests as good a view of the sea as we can. The gardens are looking beautiful at this time of year too, with lots of splashes of colour from the hydrangeas and the fuschia. I have heard guests comment that it looks a little bit "schoolroom-ish", but once the tables are laid for breakfast, the buffet table is set with an abundance fof fresh food and there are lots of people having breakfast, it does take on a different feel. There is no excuse for bad porridge however and I will bring this to the attention of those concerned. Thank you for giving our breakfast waitress a special mention - she is the best! And has had special mentions before in other reviews and also, from leading guide inspectors.

It is a long way to come again one day, but I do hope that your memories will attract you back to our remote corner of this beautiful island. Meanwhile, we are planning to re-think the morning room layout!

Kind regards,

Shoreside.

We stayed here for a couple of nights on a tour of the islands and found this the most relaxing place of all. The handful of rooms alongside the restaurant itself must be among the best designed of any I've stayed in, light and airy and beautifully decorated, with great bathrooms. I'd like to know who the architect was. And where alse could you sit having breakfast and watch an otter playing on the rocks on the loch shore opposite? The food in the restaurant is great, of course, and I think good value. We stayed with our three young children, who had a separate room next door to ours. As there are only a few (6?) rooms, with rooms arranged in pairs within the building, this worked well for as, almost as good as interconnecting rooms. Our children were the first to stay in the House Over By back in 1999, and the staff are very welcoming and friendly, so I'd recommend the Three Chimneys to families, although clearly not a budget option.

The only comment I'd make on the subject of child friendliness is that if your children eat with you in the restaurant, they'll be expected to take the full menu at £50. I can understand why the restaurant would do this given how busy it is, but it would be good if there was some sort of childrens' option (maybe for guests staying in the House Over By only) e.g half portions, option to take 2 courses at reduced cost.

Dear MichaelEdinburgh,

Firstly, I wish to send you warm thanks for your compliments and comments posted on Trip Advisor regarding your stay here recently with your family. Everyone here is delighted that you enjoyed your visit and appreciates everything you have written about your experience. Thank you very much.

Unfortunately, I was unable to meet you again, due to being called away suddenly the evening before you arrived. I would loved to have seen the children!

We appreciate your comments about the cost of the children dining in the restaurant in the evenings, but I would like to explain things more fully for the interest of anyone reading this response. We prefer children of 8 years and over in the restaurant in the evenings. Obviously this applies to those staying with us as well as those who are not. As you know, we offer to provide a meal for younger children, toddlers and babies staying in The House Over-By, early in the evening. This allows the parents to have dinner on their own a little later, if they wish, once the wee ones have gone to bed. We do not have a children's menu, but we are happy to adapt the dishes on each day's menu to suit younger diners. If they request a smaller portion, we would charge accordingly. You were only charged for a 2-course meal for 2 of the children on the first night and a 3-course meal for them on the second night, as that was what they ordered. However, I see that they had chosen to have our homemade ice cream instead of a full dessert, on each night. We would not normally have charged the full amount for the children's desserts in this instance and this is something I will ensure is brought to the attention of our Restaurant staff, for any future occasion. Thank you for bringing this point to my attention.

Lastly, we do try to encourage children to eat well in the restaurant with their parents, enjoying a family meal. However, as you know, we are quite limited in size and not all children appreciate the sense of occasion! This has created an stressful atmosphere for other diners at times, due to some unfortunate behaviour - by some parents as well as children, might I add! We try very hard to get things right for everyone, but sometimes it does not work out for the very best. Personally, we have always encouraged our own children and our children's children and young relatives to enjoy having a grown-up meal in any restaurant we have ever eaten at together over the years and we are delighted that you enjoy eating-out with your children en famille.

With very best wishes,

Shoreside.

We returned to 3 chimneys in june 14 months after our last stay. I had been concerned to read to recent negative comments on trip advisor. All I can say is that we found a warm, professional welcome, comfortable, spacious and well equipped room. two fabulous evening meals, well served by competent, friendly and knowlegeble staff. We enjoyed a packed lunch on one day and in general found that staff tried to go the "extra mile" for you.
Sure it's expensive but its a great experience and one we really enjoyed. PS the glorious weather didn't half help!

Dear cdcr,

Thank you very much for your positive comments about your second stay at The Three Chimneys and The House Over-By. Everyone here is delighted that you found our accommodation, our restaurant, the food and the service so special. Your comments certainly help to redress some of the disappointing criticisms that appear on this website. I always try my hardest to respond to these, but obviously, everyone's individual opinion is very different, just as people's expectations can vary. We do try exceptionally hard to exceed the public's expectations, but as we have such a high pbulic profile in Scotland, this is not always easy. As I have said before and no doubt, will say again, we don't write the so-called "hype"!

I notice that you mentioned the smell from the kitchen exhaust fan. Was something burning? ! Usually, guests like the smell of things cooking, especially the breads baking, for example. However, this is not something that is usually noticed by our customers. I am very sorry if it was unpleasant.

We had the best weather in the UK during the month of June. I am so pleased that you had the opportunity to see the Isle of Skye at its most beautiful and to take in the stunning sea and mountain views, as well as the lovely, long summer days. We have had some wonderful sunsets too.

Best wishes,

Shoreside.

This was as good as it gets. We had been given a voucher by our son for my birthday and extended our stay to two days. The room was lovely, bathroom fabulous and service excellent. The meals were delicious but not too heavy so one didn't feel too full. It was quite quiet with the other guests mainly Scottish and in couples rather than big parties but that added to the sense of peace. The food was as good as we had ever tasted with a short but comprehensive menu- lovely seafood. What was particularily nice was that we were never rushed when having our meal and were able to savour the lovely flavours and generally take our time. Breakast was extensive but not cooked which was a bit of a relief as you didn't feel you had to order a cooked breakfast just because it was on the menu. Picnics were really good value and excellent. It was expensive but this sort of experience doesn't come cheap and really was a treat.

Hope to be back next year - my husband has a birthday!!

“Fantastic”

We have just returned from an utterly enjoyable stay at The Three Chimneys.

We stayed for two nights and really cannot fault the evening meals. We thought that the food was fantastic and the meal was keenly priced for the quality and quantity of food. We were also very surprised at the price of alcohol. Normally you find that a resturant with a reputation like this place has a huge mark up on their wines but we really didn't find that at all.

The rooms all have a lovely outlook and are large enough. Again the mini bar prices were very good.

The only complaint that I would have (and really it isn't even a complaint) is the breakfast room. The room itself has stunning views however the furniture looks cheap and cheerful - ideally I would have liked to have seen that the owners had spent a touch more money on the tables and chairs.

Altogether though a fabulous experience and one that we are keen to repeat in the near future!

Dear Traveller,
Many thanks for your kind comments.I am delighted you enjoyed your stay here and do hope that you will come again one day. Sorry about the Morning Room not being to your taste. The tables and chairs are Ercol, by the way and were recovered last winter. We have more plans to refurbish in the future, but obviously this is ongoing constantly. Just had brand new matresses delivered for all the beds! With very best wishes. S.S.
