Three Chimneys Restaurant With Rooms

We visited the The Three Chimneys for dinner last year and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, so much so that we arranged to come back again. We booked to stay at the Three Chimneys as well this time.

As ever, dinner was fantastic with a great wine list to pick. We were interested to see the rooms having read differing opinions on tripadvisor. Certainly the decor is not over the top with a simplicity that suits the surroundings. What the House Over-by do get right are are the important things such as a friendly welcome, attentive staff and general all round good service. Personally I find this well worth paying for, rather than the construction of the breakfast tables and floors etc...

Breakfast was delicious - a great selection of smoked salmon, meats, cheese and of course all the usuals for those who can't do without their cornflakes.

Will we stay again?

Yes indeed. And we enjoyed ourselves so much we will be holding our wedding dinner here next year.

We stayed at the Three Chimneys and House-Over-By for my financee's 30th birthday, and thanks to Shirley, Eddie and their team, had a truly memorable time.

Yes, it's expensive. But you wouldn't expect anything less for the level of service provided. The truly friendly welcome on arrival, with personal introductions was a great touch. The tea and (gorgeous) cake that followed were exactly what was called for - a great start to our stay.

Service is something that not all hotels get right. But the House-Over-By (and I know, it's not a stereotypical hotel, but a 'Restaurant-with-Rooms') was spot-on. The great selection of DVDs / CDs / books, the instant provision of an ironing board, the turn-down during dinner (which on Saturday night included a wee note reminding us that the clocks went back), the regular replenishment of the coffee tray (your own cafitiere, no instant stuff here) - all little touches on their own but together they really add up.

No, the wood flooring or the style of the breakfast room is not the fashion of 2007. But to get so blinkered by this minor detail is rather a shame. The comprehensive selection of quality toiletries in the bathroom, the fruit bowl with mini-box of tablet, the Roberts radio beside the bed, the real hairdryer (not the awful push-button affair that a lot of hotels provide) - it's these details that make the House-Over-By what it really is - a lovely, homely place to spend a few days.

All that, and I've not mentioned the Restaurant. What needs to be said? It was probably the best food we've ever eaten, with the ever-changing menu making a 2-night weekend a joyful experience. The service was probably the best we've ever experienced, the perfect blend of personal and professional. The wine list has some real stars, and manages to have a nice wide selection without offering the options-paralysis of some places (think Gordon Ramsay, 41 pages........).

In summary, superlative-defying. Make a point of staying here at some point in your life.

Dear PandaLovers,

What can I say? This is such a complimentary review. Thank you very much. I think our staff are brilliant too and deserve every ounce of your praise. Meanwhile, Eddie and I are working on all the other aspects of running things here - all of the time! I do hope that you will return one day and enjoy another stay here.

With best wishes,

Dear eatwellAsbury,

Thank you for your comments on TripAdvisor. Your message was waiting for me in the office early this morning. I am so sorry that you found our accommodation in The House Over-By so disappointing, but heartened that you enjoyed your meal in the restaurant. As I wrote in response to Wagstaff recently, our architects were here to stay over the weekend to discuss our plans for the future. Very exciting. Shame it cannot be done all at once!

I have just said goodbye to 2 couples who were here for 2 days. One couple last stayed here in May 2007 and returned with their family to celebrate another special birthday. They absolutely loved everything. As I was typing here, another couple were in reception praising their bedroom, the food and their overnight stay here with great enthusiasm. None of these couples will ever know how much their comments meant to me today!! At least they helped to restore my self-esteem.

I have decided that this will be my last response to TripAdvisor. It is so stressful dealing with complaints in this way. This will always be my best advice to all travellers. It is so much better to make your complaints in person before you leave any hotel, rather than write anonymously to TripAdvisor at some later date.

Signing-out - and bouncing back yet one more time!

Shoreside.

“Simply The Best!”

Three Chimneys Restaurant With Rooms

We had always wanted to go to 'The Three Chimneys' and decided that when my husband took early retirement earlier this year we would do a gourmet tour of Scotland (terrible that we have lived in Scotland all our lives and this was our first visit to this part of the country). It also happened to be our anniversary and my birthday. We were not disappointed. My husband had bought me the book which I had read several times to whet my appetite! We have eaten in many restaurants worldwide and can honestly say this was the best ever. From the moment we arrived and were greeted by Ann it was a pleasure. The sun was shining and was warm (not bad for the end of September), and we sat outside having drinks in the late afternoon sun. The views were magnificent!

There is absolutely nothing we can fault and can't wait to go back (I keep looking at my slippers and sighing!). Next time we will go for longer as one night was not enough.

Thank you all for a truely memorable experience.

Three Chimneys Restaurant With Rooms

If you are looking for a romantic getaway do NOT stay in the House Over By.

We recently treated ourselves, after a week's camping in Skye, to three nights at the Three Chimneys. We had had a wet and wonderful week at Glenbrittle and were looking forward to continuing our walking holiday with a touch of romance and 'sumptuous' (as their accommodation is described on their website) luxury at the end of our holiday. When we arrived and were shown our room we were both almost in tears, we were so disappointed. The rooms are indeed spacious, but furnished cheaply in pine, with plastic flooring and plastic window frames. The whole thing, including the breakfast room, reminded us of a retirement home.

The rant from the owner - back from her weekend in Venice - when we mentioned our disappointment had to be seen to be believed, so defensive was it. However, the 6 page letter that followed (informing us, amongst other things, that plastic flooring had been in vogue at the time of construction - I do not remember that, do you?) was so arrogant, insulting and condescending that it has taken us till now to get over the sleepless nights and recover from our rage.

Can this really be the same team, for whom I have so much admiration, that have built the Three Chimneys Restaurant, which is, on all levels - from the locally sourced produce, delectable cooking and first rate service, to the cool rustic interior - sublime? Each evening there is a new menu to which we looked forward all day every day on our walk. It is a truly romantic spot. Staying at the House Over By should be an extension of this romance, but unfortunately it is not. It is a rude jolt out of it.

Don't miss out on the restaurant, but stay nearby, or indeed camp in one of the wonderful loch or sea-side sites nearby.

As we left we were informed by the owner that we had had a cheap holiday. With our bill at roughly $2,600 for three nights, I had to disagree.

Dear ClassicalCellist, Provence

I am very happy to disclose to the whole wide world that I was the person who "ranted" at you when you left the premises and defended some of the unnecessary comments you had made about my business in the letter you left at Reception the evening before, addressed to "Management". I am also the person who, with my husband, is responsible for the success story that is The Three Chimneys, The Restaurant and The House Over-By. We have owned the business for 23 years. As promised, I wrote to you in follow-up to our discussion, answering all the points you raised in your letter to us. This included many more points than you have described in your Trip Advisor report.

You and your husband were in quite a hurry to leave. In fact your husband did not even want to talk to me and waited for you in the car outside while you paid your bill. Although I had returned late the night before from Venice, where I had treated my husband to a surprise weekend break to celebrate his 60th birthday, I made a point of being there to meet you before you left immediately after your early breakfast. My staff had made me aware of your dissatisfaction with The House Over-By - or perhaps I should say, some design features of The House Over-By. I had only just had time to read your letter quickly. Being accused of putting plastic flowers in the bedrooms, was just one of the items you raised that incensed me.

I would like to point out to readers that your (a little over £1300) bill was for 3 nights' accommodation in The House Over-By, plus dinner on each night, including all your wine (your choice) and drinks, plus of course, VAT. Generally speaking, prices in August are at their peak throughout the hospitality industry. I make no apology for the cost of your 3-day stay here, particularly as you are effusive in your praise of the food served in The Restaurant, and the service provided. We are graded with a score of 93% by the AA and VisitScotland as a 5-Star Restaurant with Rooms, placing us in the top 10% of accommodation in the UK and Ireland. Our 6 bedrooms are in huge demand and we receive wonderful comments from guests. A very small number write to Trip Advisor, far more talk to us one-to-one, write to us, e-mail us, send cards, write comments in the Visitor's Book. We must be pleasing some people some of the time, although it is impossible to please everyone. Unfortunately, you are among those whom we have not endeared.

Finally, I dispute that I told you that you had had a "cheap" holiday. I am well aware that our prices are top-end. However, my staff are top-end too and you should feel happy to know that, in the main, the price you paid went towards their well-earned salaries, the high quality ingredients served in the Restaurant and the constant upkeep and development of our rural business.

Happy travelling.

Shoreside.
