If you are looking for a romantic getaway do NOT stay in the House Over By.
We recently treated ourselves, after a week's camping in Skye, to three nights at the Three Chimneys. We had had a wet and wonderful week at Glenbrittle and were looking forward to continuing our walking holiday with a touch of romance and 'sumptuous' (as their accommodation is described on their website) luxury at the end of our holiday. When we arrived and were shown our room we were both almost in tears, we were so disappointed. The rooms are indeed spacious, but furnished cheaply in pine, with plastic flooring and plastic window frames. The whole thing, including the breakfast room, reminded us of a retirement home.
The rant from the owner - back from her weekend in Venice - when we mentioned our disappointment had to be seen to be believed, so defensive was it. However, the 6 page letter that followed (informing us, amongst other things, that plastic flooring had been in vogue at the time of construction - I do not remember that, do you?) was so arrogant, insulting and condescending that it has taken us till now to get over the sleepless nights and recover from our rage.
Can this really be the same team, for whom I have so much admiration, that have built the Three Chimneys Restaurant, which is, on all levels - from the locally sourced produce, delectable cooking and first rate service, to the cool rustic interior - sublime? Each evening there is a new menu to which we looked forward all day every day on our walk. It is a truly romantic spot. Staying at the House Over By should be an extension of this romance, but unfortunately it is not. It is a rude jolt out of it.
Don't miss out on the restaurant, but stay nearby, or indeed camp in one of the wonderful loch or sea-side sites nearby.
As we left we were informed by the owner that we had had a cheap holiday. With our bill at roughly $2,600 for three nights, I had to disagree.

Dear ClassicalCellist, Provence
I am very happy to disclose to the whole wide world that I was the person who "ranted" at you when you left the premises and defended some of the unnecessary comments you had made about my business in the letter you left at Reception the evening before, addressed to "Management". I am also the person who, with my husband, is responsible for the success story that is The Three Chimneys, The Restaurant and The House Over-By. We have owned the business for 23 years. As promised, I wrote to you in follow-up to our discussion, answering all the points you raised in your letter to us. This included many more points than you have described in your Trip Advisor report.
You and your husband were in quite a hurry to leave. In fact your husband did not even want to talk to me and waited for you in the car outside while you paid your bill. Although I had returned late the night before from Venice, where I had treated my husband to a surprise weekend break to celebrate his 60th birthday, I made a point of being there to meet you before you left immediately after your early breakfast. My staff had made me aware of your dissatisfaction with The House Over-By - or perhaps I should say, some design features of The House Over-By. I had only just had time to read your letter quickly. Being accused of putting plastic flowers in the bedrooms, was just one of the items you raised that incensed me.
I would like to point out to readers that your (a little over £1300) bill was for 3 nights' accommodation in The House Over-By, plus dinner on each night, including all your wine (your choice) and drinks, plus of course, VAT. Generally speaking, prices in August are at their peak throughout the hospitality industry. I make no apology for the cost of your 3-day stay here, particularly as you are effusive in your praise of the food served in The Restaurant, and the service provided. We are graded with a score of 93% by the AA and VisitScotland as a 5-Star Restaurant with Rooms, placing us in the top 10% of accommodation in the UK and Ireland. Our 6 bedrooms are in huge demand and we receive wonderful comments from guests. A very small number write to Trip Advisor, far more talk to us one-to-one, write to us, e-mail us, send cards, write comments in the Visitor's Book. We must be pleasing some people some of the time, although it is impossible to please everyone. Unfortunately, you are among those whom we have not endeared.
Finally, I dispute that I told you that you had had a "cheap" holiday. I am well aware that our prices are top-end. However, my staff are top-end too and you should feel happy to know that, in the main, the price you paid went towards their well-earned salaries, the high quality ingredients served in the Restaurant and the constant upkeep and development of our rural business.
Happy travelling.
Shoreside.
