“Charming Inn, Fantastic Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2010

Ardvasar Hotel is a charming old inn right in the middle of the Sleat Peninsula, known as the garden of Skye. Richard, the owner is incredibly accommodating, friendly and knowledgeable. The views out the front of the hotel are spectacular and the restaurant and pub are a lot of fun. A very filling breakfast was served every day and we also had two nice dinners. Skye is one of the most beautiful places we've ever seen and is impossible to describe. If staying in the south part of Isle of Skye, Ardvasar Hotel is highly recommended!

A difficult one this. A small 'hotel' in a lovely setting, however it has many faults and would be better described as a guest house or B&B with a pub. We were greeted well by the friendly manager, however on our first impressions of the dated entrance hall and old-fashioned hatch through to a messy office, we wondered if we had made the right choice. However we were shown to our room which was a nice surprise. It had clearly been renovated with a modern bathroom, which was good, but there was a bit of fluff in the corners which made me question the cleanliness a bit! We booked a table in what we thought would be the restaurant, however when we went down to dinner found that everyone was eating in the bar, where a table had been reserved for us. This is when things went dramatically down hill. There was clearly trouble in the kitchen, which resulted in the poor waitress running around trying to please everyone, but seemingly getting very frustrated with the kitchen and her teenage lad helper who was a good as useless. Meanwhile the manager seemed to be running the bar next door keeping the locals happy. We had to wait an unacceptable length of time for a cold paté starter, and the american couple on the table next to us were kept waiting for their water and wine. The courses were so slow and the starter and main course not great so we did not wait to find out about dessert or coffee. We had run out of patience. Interestingly on the second night of our stay we ate at a hotel down the road and bumped into the american couple who obviously had the same idea. The breakfast was also poor, the service terrible (teenage lad with no motivation) and the porridge inedible. I do feel bad for the owner of this hotel as he was very friendly and welcoming, but feel that he really needs to improve the entrance of the hotel and the restaurant food and service for this hotel to be acceptable.

We managed to secure the last available room through LateRooms.com.

The Owner, Richard, made a point of seeking us out and personally welcoming us after we had been checked in. Our Superior Room (with a modern en-suite bathroom) was excellent - well appointed with views across the water. We slept like logs!

Dinner - fresh local scallops - and a good range of beers and wines made for a perfect one night stay. We intend to revisit and hope to be able to book for several nights next time.

Alan

My only disappointment was that we only stayed one evening! Richard is a great host, managing to be there when you need him without being intrusive. The rooms were tastefully decorated and so comfortable I hardly wanted to leave it! The enormous bed was fantastic and the best night's sleep I have had in ages!

The food in the restaurant was just right, the scallops were cooked perfectly and so were our steaks. Can't wait to come back.

My wife and I, along with a family friend, spent five very comfortable days and nights at this charming small hotel in the Sleat area of Skye. We were warmly welcomed by the very capable owner and proprietor, Mr. Richard Jeffrey, when he personally met us at the Armadale Ferry pier to drive us back to the hotel in Ardvasar.

And, we were delighted to discover that this sort of personal service was to be the norm, as Richard is very involved in every facet of accommodation at his inn. During our stay he was instrumental in arranging local taxi services, tour guides, and even an unexpected visit to a medical center in Armadale. I cannot adequately express our feelings for being so well cared for at the Ardvasar Hotel. In like measure Richard's young staff was solicitous and accommodating at every turn.

Our rooms were both comfortable and immaculately clean. The en suite facilities looked new, performed flawlessly and included nice touches like a large bath towel warmer, lighted mirror and hair dryer.

In addition, we enjoyed delicious meals for both breakfast and dinner--including impromptou creations by the chef because of my wife's many and varied food allergies. The local seafoods--including scallops, smoked haddock, salmon and scampi--were expertly prepared and artfully served in a casual setting, which we preferred. I also feasted on the excellent beefsteak and a traditionally Scottish-inspired dish called Beef Olives, which were a melt-in-your-mouth treat!

In summary, It was a most enjoyable holiday on Skye for the three of us, made possible in great measure by a genuine and consistent consideration of our comfort and by the many kindnesses we were shown by Richard Jeffrey and his excellent hotel staff.

Without any hesitancy we would look forward to being guests of the Ardvasar Hotel in the future.

When the Owner and Manager of a small hotel personally attends to details of the operation of the hotel and the restaurant AND also welcomes guests and attends to guests' special needs and requirements, the guest lucky enough to have chosen to stay in the establishment never wants to leave. The quality detail of the room decor pleased me whether I was propped against comfortable pillows reading in bed, drinking tea made from the excellent selection in the room and munching complimentary shortbread while seated in the comfortable easy chair, having pleasant dreams while sleeping in the cloud-like bed with very nice linens, or drying after a bath with heated towels (divine!). Richard Jefferies is a phenomal host and innkeeper.

My friends and I enjoyed gathering in the 'parlor' on the main floor then dining at 'our' table in the dining room. We also thoroughly enjoyed the selection of local foods on the dinner and/or bar menus.

The location near the Armandale ferry terminal was so convenient for walking. A walking path adjacent to the road made a pleasant jaunt to the Isle of Skye Museum and Armandale Castle. Richard arranged local taxi service to transport us to ferries at the north end of the island. He personally picked us up at the ferry upon our arrival.

Have I left out anything?? I hope not. My visit at the Ardvasar Hotel was one of the loveliest and most memorable travel experiences ever.
