I was disappointed in Highland Cottage, given the wonderful reputation and reviews I had read. I booked in for six nights and regretted it.
Our room, supposedly the largest in the inn, was miniscule, overly-decorated, crowded with a useless couch, decorator pillows, books, and frilly lamps. The view of the water was over a foreground of rather dilapitated buildings. Our room had a mere double bed and I ended up sleeping on the floor most nights.
Dinner was totally regimented with a process of drinks, black olives, dinner order, small appetizer, called to table, demitasse cup of soup, starter, sorbet, entree, dessert, and coffee that became an ordeal rather than a treat. The food was for the most part alright but the veg was unvarying from entree to entree and night to night while sauces often disguised the flavor of the meat or fish. I began to dread dinner each evening.
On the plus side, the place was clean, David and Jo were pleasant, the location was alright, the public room upstairs was nice, internet access was appreciated.
Also, someone should change the average price on this tripadivsor site for Highland Cottage. We paid $350 a night plus $160 for dinner for two minus drinks, which were charged at about twice the going rate as a bar in Glasgow. I know the exchange rate between pounds sterling and US dollars isn't good right now, but this is really a very expensive place to stay.
