“Awesome!”

I spent one Saturday night in the hotel with my girlfriend. It was completely empty and the owners prepared the room with 3-4h notice after a phone call. It was a bit chilly at first (really cold weekend, heavy snow in Scotland) but it warmed up soon. Not as warm as I'd want it, but it would have been a lot warmer had they known there will be visitors.

The building is amazing, very good construction and much better than everything I'm used to around Scotland. The staff and the owners (and their black Labrador :) are really friendly. The chef does a very good job and I was delighted with the food. The wines on offer are also very good and we were very happy even with the cheapest ones. The room is well above average, the bed is of a very reasonable size, good quality mattress and awesome pillows. I paid roughly £150 for a night's stay, a 3-course meal and wine for two. Overall, I'm very happy and I highly recommend Glenforsa.

If you really want to do it in style, the hotel has a 750m grass runway and a parking area in front of the hotel. You can fly there in your plane, park it and walk straight to the bar. I'm definitely flying there sometime this summer and I hope my opinion of the hotel will remain the same!

I was able to book a room here at the last minute despite it being peak holiday season - I soon found out why. Firstly the approach to the hotel is far from attractive - its more like a caravan site than a hotel. On arrival we were "welcomed" by a surly lady who led us down the dark corridors to our room. It felt like some cheap horror film. The room itself was far from bright and smelled of damp. Thankfully we didn't spend much time in it. We had planned to eat in the hotel one night but there were people in the bar who had been waiting over an hour for their food so we went elsewhere. Breakfast was adequate. Its a shame because there are nice views from the "hotel".

The Glenforsa hotel has a wonderful setting and spectacular views across the water, the air strip is fun too.
The staff are friendly and very willing- food is fine.
But its log construction is really showing its age and there is virtually no sound proofing between rooms- the bedrooms are not ones you would wish to spend much time in- very dark and bathrooms very dated.
However, the residents lounge is great, as is upstairs and enormous- has internet facility and large tv, plus spectacular views and is furnished in pretty authentic 70's style.
Can imagine a group of people who already know each other having a good time.
Also, be aware, this is serious midge territory!
Someone should spend some serious money updating this hotel, its position justifies it.

The Glenforsa has an awful lot going for it but isn't quite cashing in on its full potential - needs a little money and time spent on it. The location facing the loch is wonderful and the private landing strip provides real character for the place, but the rooms and grounds need some sprucing up and the meals don't quite hit the spot. Our room was chilly and the soundproofing was poor. The bathroom had nowhere to put toiletries - no shelving of any description - and the washbasin was tiny. The shower cubicle was pretty new and looked promising but the 'power' shower lacked any oomph and was disappointing. We ate in the hotel on our first night and wished we hadn't - overpriced and mediocre at best. Again, this hotel could be wonderful in the right hands but it does need some work.

    • Disliked — The customer service
    • Tips/Secrets: — Torasay Castle is a wonderfully friendly and inviting country house and does great lunches/cakes

We stayed at the Glenforsa Hotel for three nights in August having booked just the week before. So we felt fortunate to be able to find somewhere to stay. The location of the hotel is excellent, providing easy access to the rest of the island. The layout and ambience of the bar was good, and the bar menu was very good. We spent a very pleasant evening talking to other guests and our meal was delicious. Both the waitresses that we met were lovely, cheerful and helpful.

However, on the down side, the drive/approach to the hotel was poor, our welcome by our hostess was off hand, the room was dated, cold, and had little soundproofing. The china, cutlery and tableware were poor. I think the days of plastic tablecloths, even for breakfast, should be long gone. The garden needs a lot of weeding and cutting back so that the view can be really appreciated.

We really enjoyed visiting Mull, Staffa and Iona. It was a lovely much needed break.
