Mull is a beautiful island full of wonderful wildlife and scenery. My husband, father and myself were staying in a beautiful cottage in Salen and explored different parts of the island daily, marvelling at the scenery and searching for a glimpse of otters, deer, golden eagles and all other wildlife known to live on the island. We were very fortunate to see otters, red deer and many species of birds but the White tailed eagles and Golden eagles eluded us. We decided to go on a wildlife tour. We had several leaflets advertising tours, but which one should we choose?
Whilst out driving we stopped by a loch and chatted to a couple who were watching two Northern Bottle Nosed whales, a very rare sighting!! We were very lucky to see them. They told us that they were going on a wildlife tour the next day and gave me the number as they had been recommended to them. The tour was with Discover Mull Tours run by Pam and Arthur. I booked us onto the tour, the island was quite quiet as it was September so we were lucky to be able to join the tour at short notice.
We met at Pam and Arthurs property in Dervaig at 9.30am. There was a group of 9 of us going on the tour. We were all given binoculars and off we went. Pam and Arthur have really good knowledge of the whereabouts of the wildlife so we were soon spotting Golden Eagles and White tailed eagles, wow what a sight. Pam and Arthur set up spotting scopes so we had a fantastic close up view of them!! We saw so many different species of birds, otters, seals, deer, wild flowers ,all marked off on our tick sheet! We stopped for homemade biscuits, coffee, tea, still spotting wildlife as we ate! Delicious. We carried on the tour with Pam explaining the history and geology of Mull as we went, fascinating. We stopped to enjoy Pams homemade sandwiches, soup and cakes, again delicious. Everybody on the tour got on really well, Pam and Arthur are great hosts. We had all been asked what we would like to see during the day and we were all more than satisfied. We arrived back at Pam and Arthurs at 5.30pm. What a fantastic day we all had!!
I would recommend, weather allowing, that if you choose to take this tour to go early in your holiday so you can revisit the chosen spots and do a bit of wildlife spotting of your own, it's amazing how using your new knowledge of how to spot this amazing array of wildlife things pop up that you previously thought were not there!
