“Great views but a bit shaby!”

Isle of Mull Hotel & Spa

Apr 7, 2008

Stayed here for 2 nights for anniversary weekend. The hotel itself is fine as 3 star hotels go with a comfortable lounge area with good views over the bay. The rooms were comfortable enough although the walls were indeed very thin as described in other reviews. The bathroom was not great as it was tiny, dirty and a bit smelly - not good enough in any hotel!
We we're on the DBB rate and I really can't complain about the food, the first night it was delicious and the second evening meal was decent, breakfasts were acceptable.
There aren't very many choices for hotel accomodation on the island so I think we made a good choice as the price was very reasonable, it just had the potential to be better - management take note!

Also tip for anyone thinking of visiting Mull - bring a car! The public transport is infrequent and expensive.

Just a short review here!

*Perfect Location
*Glorious Food
*Tremendous Staff
*Clean and functional Rooms
*Top of the range pool and Spa

First time i've been to Mull and it certainly wont be the last. Please come and stay at this hotel as long as you can put up with a lot of your fellow guests moaning at things like, "My bathroom had only one bar of soap in it", " Oh there's not much to do etc." " i thought i was getting a free bottle of wine and not a glass" Eec Petty stuff like that which i believe a lot of people just moan about for the sake of it!!

A last mention to the stand in manager from Balloch i think, He is a very worthy candidate for Hotel managers job should the position ever come up! Took everything that was thrown in his direction with class.I tip my hat to you sir

“Most relaxing break”

Isle of Mull Hotel & Spa

Mar 5, 2008

for £109 pp for 4 nights DBB we didn't have high expectations of this 3 star hotel. However, I can honestly say, i have stayed in 4 star hotels that have not been so nice as this one. The room was clean & tidy, furniture showed normal signs of wear. The view from the window was stunning - right across the sea to Oban. This view was shared by the majority of rooms & restaurant & leisure centre. Staff were very friendly & efficient. Food was great (new chef apparantly) - hot, tasty, diverse & quickly served.
Luckily we arrived the week that the new leisure centre & spa opened so enjoyed brand new pool, sauna, steam room & hot tub. The spa is equipped with all the latest equipment & facilites and we treated ourselves to massages, mud treatments, facials etc. - all reasonably priced. All in all a nice relaxing & therapuetic stay - we'll be back in the summer!

Me and my boyfriend went to this hotel early this month (january) and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We booked our stay through the hotels website and got a great offer for 3 nights. We got dinner bed and breakfast. Although our stay worked out to be pretty cheap, the service and food we received was of very high quality. I must admit having read previous reviews on the hotel I was a little wary of staying here after we had already booked. But everything was great and the food was really good!
Full scottish breakfast was very filling, dinner - was a different menu each night so no chance of getting bored with same food. As there were only a few guests during our stay,(since out of season - early january) we had dinner at 7, and were not rushed through our courses at all (other reviews said this?)
With regards to food, soups great, fish lovely, everything was well presented, my boyfriend had the steak and it tasted absolutely amazing - recommend to all!
Our room was nice, had a view out to the bay, not a sandy bay but nice nonetheless, you could also watch ferrys coming in and out of the craignure harbour a couple of miles round the bay. Nice big comfy double bed with snug covers. Nice decor. Full blackout curtains - much appreciated by moi! I hate light when trying to sleep! So will be great for summer stays!
Had a tv with channels upto channel 4.
Bathroom was big enough, although to get hot water in shower I had to wait about 15mins.
Having read previous reviews i brought my own hairdryer but it wasnt needed as a hairdryer was already in the room.
All staff were very friendly, especially waiting staff.
My only slight niggle about the hotel was how thin the walls were, but all hotels I have visited here or abroad have been similar anyway - I could only see it being a pain if there was a wailing baby next door!

Overall lovely hotel, great food, scenic location, brilliant service and NO complaints!

We will definetly be returning this summer to see Mull again, this time with slightly warmer weather, but only if i can bribe my boyfriend to go on the ferry from oban again!

Recommend to all!

“Good break, good price, shame about the food.”

Isle of Mull Hotel & Spa

My husband and I stayed with the hotel for a few days in October as a well deserved rest during a busy year. We had booked it before reading any reviews as we managed to "find" a fantastic deal for 3 days - we paid £90 per person for 3 nights dbb. At this rate, we weren't expecting much with the food - which was good as the food on the first night was dreadful.

On the first evening we were able to select from the set menu which was inclusive in our deal. It was fairly standard fair, but the portions were very small and we were in and out for 3 courses within 40 minutes! Not quite a relaxing dining experience!! The sweets were appallig and inedible.

We complained to the manager the next morning and he very kindly upgraded us that evening to a la carte with a free bottle of wine thrown in. It was, after all, our wedding anniversary, and we didn't want another bad evening of food. We had already decided to eat out of the hotel (we didn't mind spending more money on food given the fantastic deal we had on the whole package - cheaper than BB for 3 nights anywhere on the island!), but we gave the hotel the benefit of the doubt. The food on this second evening was extremely good and the service much better - we had the manager as our waiter for most of the evening.

The third evening we ate out.

Breakfast on each morning was fantastic - buffet style with a large variety of choice. Nothing fancy - just good, honest breakfast food. There was the option of purchasing more "deluxe" breakfast food for a cost - but with porridge, toast, and a large variety of sausage, bacon and eggs on choice at the buffet, we never felt the need.

The building itself is reminiscent of a 1970s motel - a bit like Crossroads Motel on the 80s soap opera of that name! But the room was extremely clean and well presented. Complimentary local chocolates and 2 small bottles of local whisky were an added bonus. The room was decorated simply with modern tweeds and cosy throws for afternoon naps. The view from our first floor room was outstanding. Unfortunately, the walls are quite thin - but this is just the curse of it being a modern building. If you go expecting to hear snoring, then it isn't such a surprise! I was very aware of the man next door's breathing difficulties in the night, but my husband never heard it at all and slept through the noise! The bathroom was also clean and fairly standard. Water pressure isn't great - but it is an Island and we didn't expect it to be like our power-shower at home! The room was tidied each day by house keeping and we have no complaints on the standard of the room at all.

The Lounge area of the hotel was comfortable. Some lovely, squashy sofas to chill out in with a good book and a dram - or a cocktail! I managed to sample quite a few...

I wouldn't let other people's negativity about this hotel put you off booking. Yes, you can hear noise from next door - but other than some muffled snoring from next door/below we felt that it was just part and parcel of being in such a modern building. Yes, the food isn't all that great. The a la carte menu is well delivered, but the set menu food really isn't worth the money at all. However, if you're being offered a cheap package that includes the food - what have you to lose? You can always eat out - we still spent less than it would have cost just for bed and breakfast - any dinner was a bonus! The manager was very good at dealing with complaints (of which there were quite a few from people there - lack of staff on the first night was causing difficulty in the dining room!) and everyone was appeased and more staff were drafted in by the second day.

It was a central location on the island - half way between Tobermory and the ferry to Iona. We enjoyed relaxing days wandering through woods and up hills. Stunning views wherever you go on the island. We had a lovely time despite the snoring next door!

Many thanks for taking the time to review your visit to the Isle of Mull Hotel and Spa.
I have noted the comments you have made regards the food and as a recently appointed manager to the hotel we have tackled the area of food standard by appointing a new head chef with an experienced new second chef as well.
The points you have raised assist us in focusing on the customers views when we have our weekly staff meetings.
Again many thanks for taking the time.
