One of four bed and breakfast establishments I stayed at on a five day trip to the Hebrides. It was the most expensive and the poorest. The only clue from the road as to your destination is you don’t normally find wheelie bins at a closed field gate. Follow the track across the field and you eventually find Baile Na Cille, it is in a stunning location with fantastic views. Our room was on the first floor in the annex to the main house, I would class it as basic, décor was white emulsion, furniture was functional but mismatched and tired. Bathroom furniture was clean but again old and tired with staining showing in the bath. The usual tea and coffee facilities in the room but no milk, Richard expects you collect fresh milk from the kitchen if you want it, that’s out the door and across the courtyard. Breakfast was pleasant with a good choice of fruit, cereals, and a cooked breakfast. Literature (Visit Scotland 2013) suggests an award-winning restaurant. The reality appears a little different and at breakfast Richard was letting guests know that he had decided to cook that evening, a set meal was going to be available, I’m glad we had only booked one night and moved on, there are far better places to stay in the Hebrides.

This is why I am thoroughly in favour of freedom of speech. This reviewer is not happy with rooms that are white (does not point out that he had a suite and had a fabulous view) or with the idea of a set meal dinner. Has obviously never worked out how (or where!) food on a menu is prepared. We tell our guests at breakfast if and what we are cooking and they can decide whether to eat or not. Simple.

This guest liked our location and the food he did eat (breakfast cooked for the 17th year by the incomparable Sheila 2).
Then , at the end of the day, he is delighted to move back to Sunderland. Now, I have been to this town, to the Stadium of Somethingorother. Let me pause while I think where I would rather be Sunderland or Baile na Cille, Sunderland or Baile na Cille....
