The castle was closed for repairs, and we couldn't even walk around it. We parked at the college, and walked down, so we at least got some exercise.

“a bit disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

Catriona and I began our visit with coffee and cakes in the restaurant. This is a modern eating place, well designed, clean and friendly with a reasonable choice on the menu.
Then we went for a walk around the grounds and this is where the disappointment and confusion began and continued.
The guide leaflet had the various colour coded walks clearly marked. It seemed as if we were set on an idiot proof amble around the extensive grounds, but not so.
Unfortunately there were no coloured marker posts to be seen -- we did try looking for them!
Judging by the puzzled looks on other walkers faces, we were comforted to know that we were not alone in our lostness! Our plea to those responsible for the keeping fo the grounds is, please get good, clearly visible, colour coded markers in place without delay.

An excellent path and beautiful scenery that looks over the port of Stornoway. Good for bikes, walkers. Lovely cafe on grounds.

“Work in progress”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

Nice facility for the locals. Good views from Gallow's Hill. Castle currently closed off and being renovated. New paths being cut around Gallow's Hill. Nice café. Until the current works are complete stick to the path overlooking the harbour.
