“Hell! Is it still this bad?!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2010

We stayed at this "establishment" recently because there was nowhere else.
OMG! What a disaster! And a management team that did not give a damn!
Would advise ALL to give a very wide birth!!!!!!!

Have just returnd from Islay, having cut our holiday short. We had rented one of the self catering cottages for a week however we stayed for only one night.

The hotel and cottages are badly run down. The smell of damp in the cottage was literally overwhelming. The holes in the walls, broken tiles and mildew in the bathroom, filthy windows, broken shower head held together by sticky tape, broken kitchen worktop, carpets and furnishings/bedding from yesteryear......and as for the water supply....literally like pea soup! A warning sign greets you on arrival which basically states the water is unfit for any purpose. The suggested solution however is to collect bottled water from the main hotel. I subsequently received 2 litre bottles of local water from the hotel manager. This appeared to be our ration for the day!

Not surprisingly, we checked out following morning(after a bad nights sleep - had to sleep on the sofa bed in living room due to smell of damp in bedrooms). Ironically, the staff didnt seem at all surprised. I get the impression that guests checking out early is a regular occurrence. The half hearted apology from the reception desk suggested that the current owner is unwilling to spend any money upgrading the hotel and cottages.

I suppose the writing was on the wall from the moment we arrived.......the delapidated sign at the road end....the pot holed driveway to the entrance of the hotel.

Full marks however to Caledonian Macbrayne who thankfully changed our ferry ticket for free of charge and allowed us to get home home at no extra cost.

All an all.....a bad experience(and waste of £130 on a return ferry ticket).

This location started as a nightmare but thanks to the incredible kindness of a BB owner and great customer service of DM Mackenzie car rental our trip was saved. No taxis were available when we got off the ferry in the rain and no buses ran at night. we were stranded. An angel saved us and drove us out to the Machrie.

The machrie itself was very dated and to be honest was shockingly poor for anything than a 1 or at the most 2 start accomodation. We had a cottage and it took most of the night to heat up to 15C. That being said if you want to stay in somewhat exclusion and like the country living aspect, you can survive just fine. The food was fine. maybe a bit expensive, and the bar was very social. The front desk was helpful but staffed to a minimum (ie bartender and front desk staff was one person).

overall liveable but look at other options, especially if you don't want to drive as it is located well off the main road and several km from Port Ellen.

If you are a golfer then at the machrie you are in heaven, unique wonderfully conditioned links course at your doorstep. Food and service is of good quality. However, hotel and cottages need serious capital investment in order bring up to modern standard. The place is slowly falling down, Graham Ferguson Lacey does not appear to want to put a penny in and the high standard of lodgings and golf available on the mainland at machriehanish, machriehanish dunes and campbeltown will eventually sink this enterprise.

Where do I start? Wallpaper peeling off of the walls. The stair carpet was totally threadbare. The mattress was probably one of the worst we have slept on. For £120 per night this hotel does not represent value for money. Have to admit that the breakfast was good.

We stayed in a standard self catering lodge for 4 days in early May, and were a bit concerned having read some grim reviews onTripadvisor. We did however enjoy our stay, although there were some faults
On the plus side the cottages are rented by the day, enabling us to have a long weekend without having to pay for two weeks rental. They also allow dogs at no extra cost- another reason for our choice. The chalets were built in the 70's , and I don't think much has been done to them since, but the bedrooms- both with twin beds- were spacious, with ample storage space for clothes etc. The living room was large, with a dining table and comfortable 3 piece suite. The views from the windows across the machair were wonderful, and the night storage heating efficient so we were always warm. The shower was powerful, and there was always plenty of hot water. Yes , the water is brown, but this is not dirt, but coloured by the peat it comes from, so is perfectly OK for washing. The water in fact is so soft it was lovely- you would pay a fortune for treatments with water like this from posh spas!
On the downside the kitchen was tiny, and the units on the verge of collapse. The floor sagged in places, making us worry we were going to fall through on standing on it. Some of the double glazing units had faults allowing condensation, so it was like looking through frosted glass, obscuring the wonderful view. Our TV was a 12" portable- very small, but it did work, All the furnishings and equipment were stuck in a 70's timewharp, but they did the job
Situated close to Port Ellen the Machrie is convenient for visiting the south of the island, and not far from Bowmore and the north
We can't comment on the rooms at the hotel, but the reception area and bars were cosy, and the food in the restaurant varied and enjoyable. All our requests were dealt with promptly and efficiently by the staff here.
All in all, don't expect luxury and you won't be disappointed. A good place to stay to explore what is a really beautiful island

Very acceptable, was very close to where we were staying so went for convenience. Had read reviews that had made me a bit reticent but it was fine. Nothing special but food was well cooked and I imagine that there would be more choice in season. Service was very good and friendly.
