“in need of major investment”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2009

Stayed this weekend in the lodges - dated, damp-smelling and wholly inhospittable.
Upon preparing to check out at 10.30AM on Sunday morning, the cleaners came round in a mini van and shouted " its after 10 o'clock - you're out!!"

Have stayed in the Bowmore distillery cottages before and they are a much better bet.

We are just back from a two nigt stay at the Machrie with two children and three grandparents. We had a great time. The food was lovely and plenty of it, the staff could not have been nicer and, of course, the golf course is amazing. Everyone had a great time - from the under 10's to the over 60's.

On the down side the self catering cottages are a bit shabby but we found them clean and to be honest with two kids and a stack of golf gear we weren't wanting the Ritz. The rest of our party stayed in the hotel and their rooms were lovely. The weather was almost warm when we were there and we played some really great golf. A golf buggy helped us around but made for some fairly hairy driving at some points.

A lot of folk seem to return time and again, so I for one am glad if there are people who don't want to go back - it will keep it quiet for the rest of us. Great memories.

Lacking in warmth and character, a mix or some great staff and those lacking customer skills. Over priced wine and food, and a lack of service by bar staff in the evenings. Saving graces, hardworking waitress, food was reasonable and the mini bus driver was hospitable, others take note!! Not a place I would bother with again, cheap deals or not. Hotel is sadly neglected and just is not good enough now, living on tradition.

We recently had dinner at the hotel and from the minute we sat down, we felt the night was not going to go well. The staff are sour-faced, unhelpful, incompetant and not once were we asked if we were enjoying the food or if they could get anything else etc. Food is served in a dated room overlooking a car park courtyard and unimaginatively served on school dinner style plates. My asparagus consisted of 5 spears, no garnish, for 5 pounds! My husband had tiny overcooked scallops with some limp iceberg lettuce. 6.95 I think. For mains, 2 burnt ruskoline covered salmon fishcakes with virtually no salmon, and overcooked beef and black pudding with bisto gravy, again no garnish other than a sprinkling of dried herbs which seemed to be scattered over every dish in the room. The beef, 17.50 and the fishcakes 13.50............completely overpriced! Oh...forgot...served with a platter of undercooked school type veggies between both of us. Needless to say, we skipped pudding. The management in this place is clearly in need of a shake up. A far better option for friendly, smiling service, value for money delicious meal is the Bridgend Hotel, Bridgend.

My mother, my daughter and I stayed in one of the cottages attac hed to the hotel and for almost £100 per night expected something a little smarter. Although it appeared to be clean we did not appreciate the stains on the carpets, the cracked basin and peeling wallpaper in the bathroom. The outside needed a good coat of paint too. We did not mind the fact that it was dated, but did not expect it to be so scruffy. The hotel itself is stuck in the 1970s, but we found this quite endearing. The food was pretty good in the hotel restaurant, especially the nicely cooked vegetables, and we liked the fresh flowers on the tables. Islay is beautiful and well worth a visit, especially if you are interested in whisky, wildlife, walking etc. There are magnificient beaches and the main town of Bowmore, with its round church, is particularly stunning. Everyone is very friendly and the food was of a high standard everywhere we went, but we cannot recommend the Machrie Hotel until they do some tidying up and update their cottages.

In 2005, a reviewer wrote on this website that "the staff are the most unfriendly bunch of miserable people I have ever met" - in 2008 little has changed. The poorest hospitality I have ever received. The hotel is mismanaged and requires serious investment. Shabby and tacky décor. Abysmal breakfasts. I recommend camping over and above staying in this hotel – at least then you don’t have to encounter unhelpful, rude and aggressive staff and can make your breakfast using local quality ingredients on your stove.

Stayed for 5 nights during Whisky Festival.
Weather fantastic, better than Med!
Hotel staff very friendly, and food ok, but pricey for what it is,presentation poor. Restaurant dowdy.
Hotel and rooms ok, but a bit dated and scruffy, but very clean and pleasant.
Nothing to do in Hotel if not a Golfer, and especially a woman.
Car Hire booked, very reasonable, and Island wonderful, lots to see and do, plenty of fresh air, walks, pubs, reading, picnics, and wildlife , and wild flowers in abundance.
Whisky festival fabulous, ARDBEG distillary first class.
Came back fully refreshed and stress free!!!!!!!!
