“A light in the Darkness”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013

During the blackout caused by the snow storms of March 2013, we stayed at the Islay Hotel. Without electricity, we were a bit worried about our stay. However Roland and his staff were dedicated to solve every problem we encountered. The hotel is a perfect starting point for a whisky tour on the south part of the island.

We took a small (8) birding group to Islay for a week. We chose the hotel a year ago because it had just reopened after total refurbishment. We were not disappointed. It is ideally placed next to the Port Ellen harbour and made a perfect base for our stay.
The staff were very friendly and the service was excellent. Food was generous and good, wholesome cooking including local fare. Feed back from participants is all good. Rooms and general services were of a very high standard. We had cold and blustery weather, although thankfully dry, and the hotel was wonderfully warm to return to at the end of the day. We will be back.

Room Tip: All our rooms were good

A great place with a good bar, a good restaurant and very good service.
We used this place as a central place for a whisky tour on the island.
People in the hotel were very nice and helpfull.
Good breakfast and a good dinner as well.
In the bar we had a very good, time with Nigel and Avril.

Called in here whilst waiting for the Ferry and was very impressed. We had Coffee and Empire Biscuits in the Bar Area and it was served to us by a very friendly gentleman. Very cheap at £3.00 each - would call again.

what a wonderful surprise to find such a great hotel.
Our room was large and airy with a huge double bed.
A jacuzzi bath which was heaven.
The food was exceptional and to many whiskies to choose from.We wished we could have stayed an extra night. We will go back later in the year for a few days.
Thankyou to all the staff for a warm welcome.

We booked into the Islay Hotel for the weekend as we were attending a birthday party in Port Ellen. The staff were very friendly and heplful, the room was very spacious and the bathroom had a jacuzzi bath. We arrived early on the Saturday morning and although breakfast was just finished it was no problem for our friends and ourselves to have a full breakfast - plenty of choice with lovely croissants and pastries. Dinner on the Saturday night, breakfast on Sunday was also excellent.
The hotel is very tastefully decorated with a great ambience throughout - bar area well stocked and a very pleasant area to relax in with friends. We would thoroughly recommend the hotel and hope to return ourselves in the near future.

Room Tip: Contact the hotel to discuss your requirements.

The Hotel:
We (2 people) stayed at The Islay Hotel for a few days just after xmas 2012. Underfloor heating out of order in our room, but rectified immediately by staff with very effective portable heater; bathroom towel rack not heated, room decor not very modern, but completely serviceable. Loud music and patrons from the bar one night after a party, audible from our room circa 11pm, but all quiet soon enough.Really lovely, helpful staff.

The Restaurant:
Really convenient to have on site, good food, generous portions. The hotel dining room is lovely, good breakfast with warm fresh pastries, as well as the usual cooked to order.

The Bar:
Fantastic range of whisky (duh) etc.

All round a really pleasant experience, would consider returning if in Islay again.

Room Tip: Try getting a room not above the bar/dining room, hotel sometimes hosts parties.
