“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

Didn't stay here as we were camping just down the road but we ate and drank here for two nights! Food was stunning. Had the venison. Blew my mind! A recent reviewer wrote that they were disappointed at the cheese board. Couldnt be any further from the truth. That was probably the highlight! Beautiful friendly staff and my big thanks goes out to lovely young lass that sorted us out with an extra big chunk of the Dunsyre Blue. Excellent bar with local ales, great whisky and of course a cosy fire. What more do you want? Loved it!

Thank you for your generous feedback following your visits to the hotel. It is heartening to read that you enjoyed the overall experience and as with every review your comments will be relayed to my staff. I agree we are proud of the cheeseboard we serve and I am glad that you enjoyed it so much.

Thank you for posting your kind comments of appreciation of our food and our open fire which is always a welcome sight on a wet day. I do hope that you managed a few days of better weather during you visit and will not be deterred from a return visit to Islay in the future.

“Nice atmosphere and swift service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

We were staying in a self catering cottage and droped into the bar one evening for a pub meal. having been here the previous night to listen to some live music and enjoy a wee dram we knew the place had a good atmosphere and we were not disappointed. The meal was fine although my lamb shank was nice it didnt fall off the bone as easily as it usually does. Desserts were excellent though and a wee dram to finish infront of a roaring fire made it a lovely evening

Thank you for your kind comments, it is always nice to know that our efforts to create a warm atmosphere are appreciated. I have noted your comment regarding the lamb shank and will discuss this with our head chef to ensure that this favourite dish remains of the highest standard. I hope you will return again to visit another time.

“Great ambience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

This was a lovely place to chill and enjoy lovely food. Only disappointment was the cheeseboard. Lack of local cheeses.
However the friendliness and service was great.

Thank you for your review. It is good to hear that you enjoyed your visit with us. Unfortunately the island does not produce a local cheese, however we do serve a selection of lovely Scottish cheeses.

“A pleasant evening”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

We went with friends to the hotel on a Wednesday night when live music was advertised. Three of our party have very good meals. Unfortunately while they were really enjoying theirs, my meal of langoustine was very disappointing. There were plenty of small langoustine on my plate and it looked really good but many of them were not firm and seemed to have been frozen although they were advertised as fresh. That was very disappointing. Some musicians arrived around 8.30 but it seemed as though the music was not actually a performance for the patrons as much as a bit of a "jam session" for the musicians who seemed to talk and twiddle around for most of the evening. There was an exception to this - the publican sang two songs unaccompanied in Gaelic. That was just fantastic - very haunting. We loft around 10.30 - perhaps the music got into full swing after that, but we were left somewhat disappointed by the music.

Thank you for your review. The local langoustines are a very popular dish and are always served fresh and I am sorry that you did not enjoy yours. Their size varies with each delivery we receive and generally they are large. Our music evenings are intended to be relaxed and informal and we welcome visitors who wish to join in. It is nice to know you enjoyed Grahame's singing and we hope you will return again another time.
