“Great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013 via mobile

We stayed in the Distillery Cottage. Wow! First thing that hits you is the size....it's huge. 3 bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs. The dining/lounge/kitchen area is spacious and although there were 5 adults and 3 kids staying there, you didn't feel cramped. The location is right in the heart of Bowmore, public transport and the high st right on your doorstep.

The cottages at Bowmore are terrific. I was there in early May with a large group of friends and we rented several cottages including the Old Bakery, Stillman's and Mashman. Large bedrooms and common rooms - notably in the Old Bakery. A large, fairly well equipped kitchen in the Old Bakery. The furnishings are modern, clean and in good repair. Nothing "rundown" at all. Really nice bathrooms in each bedroom. The Old Bakery and Stillman's back onto a lovely courtyard where there's a picnic table where we had oysters and wine late one afternoon. The staff was attentive. We had a problem with the brand new fridge. It was replaced within 48 hours (because no one on the island could repair it). I've stayed in many "apartment hotels" and this was definitely ione of the best. Great location at the centre of the village. Within 2 minutes of the Lochside Hotel with its great whiskey bard and restaurant. Even closer for terrific fish and chips at the Cottage Restaurant.

Lovely set up for a large group, nice sized kitchen, comfortable bedrooms all en-suite. Wonderful upstairs common room. Staff attended to all our needs promptly and profesionally. Have been visiting Islay for 20 years, this is by far and away the best place to stay.

We spent Christmas at the cottage, with my dad. It was so beautiful and brilliantly equipped. We had a wonderful time and were so impressed with the accommodation. There was only 2 things that would have made the place the most perfect holiday let on the planet:
1) If the knives were sharp! As we knew a lot of places would be closed over Xmas I did a lot of cooking whilst there. If you're expecting knives capable of chopping an onion, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed!
2) If the fridge was bigger. Luckily I decided on a traditional Christmas chicken curry, because there's no way a turkey would have fit in the fridge. The fridge is tiny tiny tiny, and right down on the floor, making it hard to get in and out.
As you can see, these are rather trivial. If you're planning on cooking, I'd recommend taking some knives and a cool box. Otherwise, the cottage will be perfect exactly as it is!

We stayed in Mashman's Cottage the three days that we were in Bowmore. The location of the distillery and cottages is great. There is a market for all of your self-catering needs right across the street and the main bus stop for all the routes that take you around the island picks up about 50m from the distillery gate. The staff at the distillery are extremely kind and helpful.
The cottage itself is beautiful and cozy. The Mashman's cottage is the perfect size for a couple visiting for a few days with a gorgeous view of Loch Indaal. The upstairs bedroom, normally set up with two twins, can be made up into a queen upon request. When we come back to Islay, we will definitely be staying at Bowmore Cottages again.

Thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at Bowmore Cottages in August 2012. Very comfortable accommodation and very well equipped. Patio doors from living/dining room opened onto walled landscaped garden area - mild weather meant we could have breakfast outdoors and take coffee down to sea wall with views over Loch Indaal! Both bedrooms had luxury ensuites each with wonderful jacuzzi bath. Complementary bottle of 12 year old Bowmore was very much appreciated. Free distillery tour was interesting and informative. Would thoroughly recommend a stay at these beautiful cottages.

Stayed in Garden Cottage in Juy for 3 nights. The kitchen area looks on to the back courtyard and therefore the sea, so lovely to sit there. The lounge, though, was small with no view so we didn't really use this at all. Kitchen modern but no dishwasher and static oven (didn't think they made them anymore). So kitchen looked good but lacking a bit in facilities if you actually want to cook anything. Everything else fine. This cottage is advertised for 4 but would have been a squash for 4 adults.
Included is a bottle of Bowmore and a trip round the distillery, both worth having!
Leisure centre next door with swimming pool - closed on Mondays.

Room Tip: Bowmore is probably the best place to stay for eating etc
