“Enjoyable stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

We visited Islay as part of a whisky tour. we enjoyed our stay at the Lochside the room was fine clean and comfortable with a view of the loch but the shower room was small and cramped. We enjoyed our meals, and generally the service was good and cheerful but with a couple of lapses, no water for tea at breakfast one day, and a dessert that took ages to appear. There is an excellent view over the loch from the dining room and a wide and varied stock of Malt whiskies behind the bar

This was our most expensive stay but far from the best which may be the norm on Islay

Recently we were staying in a nearby hotel for a week and visited the Lochside Hotel restaurant and bar on at least two occasions. On our first visit we had a lovely and reasonably priced lunch sitting at a window table overlooking beautiful Loch Indaal. While there we had conversations with several members of the staff and customers as well. Later we returned one evening when the band, ManRan, was playing. We were greeted by several members of the staff including the owners who remembered us, were seated at "our" table and enjoyed a splendid evening of food music, and dancing. And again staff and customers helped make us feel part of the community. The following day walking about Bowmore more than one person along the street stopped to ask us how we enjoyed the music the prior evening. Just what we hope will happen when we travel. If we return to Islay for a visit we will surely visit the Lochside Hotel again.

By Western Isles standards this hotel is good value for money. The rooms are clean with very comfortable beds but are distinctly on the small side. If you like to spend time in your room this is not the place for you. The restaurant is very good with superb views over Lochindaal. The service was pleasant and efficient and there was a varied menu of well cooked food with, by modern standards, huge portions. The cooked to order breakfasts were a bonus and overall I was satisfied with the hotel.

Gave this Hotel & Restaurant a terrible review in April & revisited this week after hearing the owner had put a Manager in to run things - what a turnaround

The service and food in the restaurant was fantastic - in fact probably had the best Fish & Chips I have ever tasted and the portion was huge - the quality of food that our guests had also looked amazing and all complimented the quality - well done to Dave the Manager & the team he has set up

On visiting this hotel I found the staff and their attitude disgraceful. On visiting this Hotel for many years before I certainly would not visit it again. A few years ago this establlishment was the hub for LOCALS, with the management now it is not surprising that hardly any local people will visit this venue!

Yes, the Lochside Hotel is expensive, but so are all the other accommodations on Islay. Stay home if you want to save money!

The rooms are, in deed, in need of some TLC, but beds are OK and there's plenty of hot water in the shower. The restaurant is very popular and food is great. Breakfast is nice and the view for the dining room is... well, you can only see the Loch and what is behind it.

Location is central, just near the bus stops, Islay Whisky Shop and Bowmore Distilery. What more could you ask for? Oh yes, one thing: extremely welcoming and friendly staff!!

4 out of 5. Would be 5 if the price was better and some new paint on the walls.

We stayed in the Harbour Inn for our first night but had to move to the Lochside Hotel as we could only manage to book a room for one night. The Lochside is a tired looking hotel in need of updating. The room I had looked onto the main road. The decor and furnishings are not very welcoming and quite a lot of noise could be heard from the bar at night. The cooked breakfast was disgusting the plate was swimming in a watery grease which I decided to pass on, the fresh orange was like battery acid. The evening meal was pretty good. Would I stay here again? No chance. If you can get a place at the Harbour in go for it
