“I have seen better doss house,s”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2009

We arrived ,my wife and our friend and I,we were shown to our rooms .Within 15 mins. we left. Our rooms had no useable drawer space and we were advised we could just work out of our cases. This is not a good advert for Islay or Scotland.
The rest of our holiday was great after we obtained alternative accomodation thanks to the very helpful staff at the Tourist Information Center.

We booked this hotel as part of our trip around the West coast of Scotland. Having read the reviews we were a bit wary of what to expect, but were pleasently suprised when we arrived. The Bowmore may not be the classiest hotel we have stayed in but the warm welcome from the staff and the friendly locals in the bar more than made up for that. Our room was at the back of the hotel and was adequate for our needs---we did not encounter any noise from any other part of the hotel and had a comfy stay.
The public bar is great fun----the people are friendly and we must give a special mention to Peter the owner, what a character. Ex professional footballer and dapper dresser he had us in stitches with his many tales of island life. The menu was also one of the most extensive we have come across----everything from stir fries to crocodile and ostrich, good value and tasty with it!!
All in all, not the plushest place but the owners are currently carrying out extensive renovations and the friendly welcome was not matched in other places we stayed at. Accommodation on the islands is always expensive and for what we paid we were quite satisfied with what we received. If we are ever on Islay again we would probably stay at the Bowmore once more.

In our two weeks in Scotland, the Bowmore Hotel was the most disappointing -- and one of the more expensive -- accommodations we booked. Rates are high on Islay and there also weren't many open rooms when I booked, so Bowmore it was.

We had Room 4, a double (which in this case meant separate beds), for GBP 90. The room was small, basic, but mostly serviceable. The bathroom was clean. Breakfast was nothing to write home about, but fortunately it wasn't mouldy as others have described here.

The biggest problem was the noise. I knew we'd be over a pub when we booked the room, but I've stayed over pubs before on multiple continents and the rooms usually don't have too much noise. Not so at the Bowmore Hotel. The floors are quite thin, apparently. I can tell you that the patrons like their heavy metal, and they like it late into the evening, so we were serenaded by the loud thumping of "Back in Black" and "Welcome to the Jungle," plus we could hear conversations between the patrons screaming over the music. Not the place to be if you're jetlagged and want to be in bed around 22:30.

Another disappointment: the website claims the hotel has wifi for a fee. Not so. We were hoping to check in on our email -- and we needed a distraction given the music -- but it was not to be.

I'd have expected to pay GBP 50 for this, not the GBP 90 we paid (which was about CAD $167 with a weak pound). The next night in Oban, we stayed at a much nicer place for the same money. Two nights later on Skye, we stayed at another far superior B&B for GBP 60. So my main complaint is that the level of the accommodations at the Bowmore Hotel are pretty well out of whack with what you pay. If you can avoid it, do.

Despite the friendliness of the staff and the quite reasonable food on offer this is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The shabbiness of the rooms beggars belief. When I think of the lovely places I have stayed for half the price it makes really annoyed. As a Scot I am embarrassed to think of visitors from overseas experiencing this abysmal standard of accommodation. Peter, it's high time you made the acquaintance of a pot of paint and a paintbrush!

We booked here despite the bad reviews simply because we couldn't find anywhere else to stay. Big mistake!
We booked three rooms for 5 people. All rooms have horrible bunk beds, very limited space and no view whatsoever. Just the opposite of the charming, friendly B&B experiences we had had before.
One of the rooms was extremely noisy because it was just above the bar (despite it being a weekday). The replacement room allocated the next day had no bathroom.
One of the other rooms was crappy and shabby. The red carpet in the bathroom was filthy with huge white stains. The bed linen was torn.
Lighting was deficient in all rooms.
Breakfast was appalling. Even though we ordered the full Scottish breakfast both days, the second day we only got eggs, sausage and bacon. No jam is provided for toast. Not that you will need it, because the bread was all mouldy. Disgusting!
On top of it all, staff were not friendly and even tried to charge us twice for the same room. How convenient, huh?
Bowmore Hotel was 15 pounds more per person per night than any other B&B we stayed in during the same trip, but it was 200% worse! Don't go anywhere near it!

Read the last comment and think the group must have a problem as i dont understand there complaints. i stay at the bowmore hotel frequently and over the years have never had a reason to complain. As the staff are warm and friendly and the food is always delicious.

The pin-stripe suited staff seemed friendly to start with, however very quickly it became apparent that there was no customer service ability amongst them. Turning a blind eye to the faulty towers type feel to the place we decided to make the best of it. Cleanliness was not high on the cards requiring several requests to have items replaced with some which had been cleaned. The food presented to us did not appear fit for human consumption (and to be honest I don't think most people would have given it to an animal either). Upon politely pointing out the substandard food it was whisked away from the table and the staff turned offensive suggesting that our group wouldn't know good food. The waiter claimed he hadn't ever had a complaint in 35 years however the approach to dealing with us made it feel like a regular occurance.
We went to another establishment locally where we had a great meal.
I would avoid the Bowmore at all costs, this establishment should really be closed down, I will be writing to the local environmental health officer and suggesting that they pay a visit.
