“Amazing Stay”

The Lake of Menteith Hotel

After booking this hotel, I read some of the comments on this site and was a bit worried about staying there. I can honestly say I was amazed at the standard of the hotel as soon as I walked in the door, the place was spotless and we were welcomed warmly, we were given the guided tour and the views over the restaurant were to die for. We were taken up to our room and I admit I was dreading the door opening, yet I shouldn't have been worried, the rooms had been recently refurbished and met the same high standard as downstairs. That night we ate in the restaurant, food and service were very good, although I wished we had booked in the summer as the view was pitch black, maybe some lighting outside would help?
Will be returning in the spring and summer to make the most of the view.

“Absolutely awful”

Okay, lets get straight to the point - this hotel is awful.
I booked a room in this hotel for my wife and I having seen the hotels website. For a hotel that is run by Nick Nairn the place is awful. The room was run down, dirty, carpet in the bathroom, stains in the bath.....simply horrible with a very unlcean feeling to the room we had.
It was that bad that we did not stay. Indeed, although I left our luggage at the hotel (as I dropped it off in a mad dash to a function in Stilring) I ended up book a room at the corporate style Stirling Highland Hotel at 9pm that night. Quite simply I was not prepared to let my wife stay at Menteith Hotel.
On the Sunday morning we drove back to Menteith and picked our bags up, told them what a cheek they have to sell their "luxury" rooms for £150 and demanded our money back.
The only good point was that they didn't charge us.
If you like hotel rooms which are clean and hotel with a bar the opens afetr 11pm and has a front door which is not locked at 11.30pm then dont go here.
I am quite happy with hotel rooms which dont have all the frills, but they need to be clean. Menteith is not that.

Our staff were as polite and helpfull as possible to this guest. The guest chose not to stay and we did not charge them. Nick Nairn is not involved with this hotel and nowhere do we suggest he is.

“Dreadful bedroom”

The Lake of Menteith Hotel

Nov 15, 2007

My wife and I booked the hotel for our wedding anniversary. We checked the website first and all looked excellent. Tranquil picturesque surroundings, great food, lake side terrace room. On arrival the hotel looked great, the reception, bar and restaurant have been well refurbished and looked beautiful. The bedroom, a "Lake terrace Room" with our own terrace overlooking the lake was a huge disappointment. It was dirty, very tired furnishings and the toilet looked like a poor DIY job. I could write my name in the dust on the mirror. The "terrace" had four wood chairs with flaking paint, dead plants in pots, broken deck chairs lying around and the wood patio doors looked like they were rotten with bits hanging off.
The restaurant was alright at night but not startling. We had booked in for two nights but left after one having been told the rooms were a "work in progress". Thats fine, but dont charge £200 per night for work in progress. I have written to the hotel to complain, e - mailed and to date have not had a reply. So my advice is dont go - there are plenty of good hotels in Scotland where the work has been finished and the stay is a relaxing pleasure - not so at Lake of Menteith. Shame - a beautiful location ruined by a run down hotel who dont even have the decency to reply to complaints.

Readers could be forgiven for being a bit confused with the dramatically different levels of customer satisfaction here. We have, in the last two weeks just completed a two year renovation of this waterfront hotel with all standard rooms just relaunched. This follows the complete refurbishment of the bar, lounges, restaurant, reception, exterior and behind the scenes over this period. The varying reports reflect the stages of completion. Over the last four months we have been bedding in a stronger management and kitchen team with great results, complementing developments. We have Lake View rooms with stunning views of very good size which will be refurbished in Spring. However they are in good condition and priced accordingly. We will also be adding a large herb garden and gazebo. If any customer has any concerns during their stay please let us know, giving us the opportunity to put things right or make your stay more enjoyable. My wife or I are usually in the Hotel and there is always a Manager on duty. For the record Nick Nairn is not involved in the Hotel at all, though he has a fantastic cook school five minutes from the Hotel.

“Badly needing the upcioming refurbishment”

The Lake of Menteith Hotel

Oct 15, 2007

The web photos (October 07) look good. The hotel is beautifully situated. The main public rooms are great. However the room (number 7) was 'tired' and badfly needed some tlc. Cracked basin, - chairs with some bad marks on them. The hotel will be going through a refurbishment at the end of the season but to what extent I do not know. The fixed price meal was pricey (£27 for 2 courses and only four choices for each section). For drinks - wine list is expensive - frankly a rip off. Bar menu looks a better option and if you cannot get in - go to Aberfoyle - there are options to eat out there. I think they were actualy letting their supplies run down because of the impending work on the hotel.

“Fabulous”

The Lake of Menteith Hotel

Aug 16, 2007

We stayed at the Lake Hotel at the end of July and what a great experience it turned out to be. The food was fabulous. Fresh fish and local beef, that was one of the best steaks I have ever tasted. We stayed in a standard room, which although a bit dated, but the manager told us that they are due for refurbishment at the end of the season. And to be fair this was reflected in the price of the room. The staff very friendly and professional and could not be faulted. We look forward to returning soon for a special wine dinner that they are running in November. Worth the money for the view and food from the restaurant alone.
