I stayed for 2 nights with my wife and in-laws. We were booked into 2 Classic rooms on the 2nd floor.
Welcome/Check-in: The welcome was non existent, there was no door man or anyone to help remove the bags from the car. The check-in was friendly, quick and efficient. Rooms were made available to us, even though we arrived well before 3pm.
The rooms: Tastefully decorated in the old style, fantastic “Heavenly Bed”, large marble bathrooms, bright and airy. It’s ironic that we were probably staying on the only 2 nights of 2007 when air conditioning would have been welcomed!
Ailsa Bar: We took afternoon tea, the Whisky tasting and a few drinks in here on different occasions. Service and product both up to scratch, though I did pop in one morning to read the paper and have a coffee, and the staff member that was on approached every other guest except me even though I caught her eye a few times.
Turnberry Restaurant Dinner: We took the Creative (5 course) Tasting Menu with wine match for dinner on our first night. The food was exceptional, as was the service. The final 2 wine matches were a little disappointing in terms of the quality of the wines chosen. The food service slowed noticeably as the restaurant became fuller, increasing the pressure on the kitchen. Do not dine here if you want a speedy dinner, we lingered happily here for around 3 hours, any less and we would not have been able to enjoy the food and wine fully.
Turnberry Restaurant Breakfast: Again, the staff at breakfast are attentive and on the ball. There is a good selection on the continental buffet, and the hot a la carte selection is ok. It is a shame however, that you have to pay a premium for items such as kippers and pancakes or waffles that would normally be included anywhere else.
Stagioni: Had an enjoyable dinner here on the last night, looking out over the ocean from above the spa building. Food and service were top notch, and the speedier service would suit those who don’t wish to linger.
Tappie Toorie: A brasserie above the Club House with a good bar menu. Very relaxed and informal.
Spa: Pool/spa facilities excellent. The pool area is great (looking out over the ocean), and the massages were fantastic.
Pitch & Putt and the Tennis Court: Had a great time on both of these!
Outdoor Activities: A good selection, the archery was particularly fun!
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our break at Turnberry, I guess proving that you don’t have to be a golf fanatic to stay there! Yes, the hotel is pricey, and you pay through the nose for everything, but we had a fantastic time and would do it again!
