I booked a break at the Turnberry firstly for a family vacation and secondly for time to play golf with my son.

The check in procedure was fast ,smooth and polite(very efficient)

We had a cottage which maybe needed a bit of an upgrade but with to youngish children gave us a bit more flexibility certainly when it came to dining as it is a bit pricey but very good.

The main hotel is a bit of a mish mash of tastes and designs.

the positive which way outway any negatives are as follows.

Service was impeccable ,what you expect from a Westin resort but sometimes they go out of there way to make you feel special.

Golf ,managed 2 rounds on the Ailsa course this is what the hotel is really about OUTSTANDING...............

Overall a great experience.......

“Excellent!”

Just returned from a week at Turnberry with my family - including 2 children- and although the weather was bad, I have to say it was one of the best holidays we've ever had. We stayed in a cottage which gave us flexibility to do what we wanted. The cottage wasnt overly large but was comfortable. The hotel breakfasts we enjoyed very much as we did tea in the hotel lounge and evening meals in the Stagioni Restaurant

There were plenty of things for non- golfers to do. We made use of the leisure facilities - the pool was great as was the pitch and putt course- and we also enjoyed horse riding and archery at the activity centre. The setting and beach were superb.

The staff were very friendly and nothing too much trouble for them and service excellent. I cannot understand the negative reviews!

The meals and activities were overpriced and overall it wasnt a cheap option for a holiday but there was something to keep the whole family happy and so definately worth every penny!

“Really hate to say this as a Scot, but what a let down”

The Westin Turnberry Resort

On arrival the place is mind blowing. The coastline and the grounds are stunning. I was born not far from here and I can tell you it is a great location. The hotel arrival is simply breathtaking. The porters were also great; they took the car and carried the clubs and bags, perfect. It was all looking promising.

The front desk, however, is appalling. They are clearly not being trained and have no idea about what they are doing. When I started the check in process I gave her my credit card and Platinum SPG card. She asked me what the SPG card was. I explained to her it's nature and that it entitled me to an upgrade at check in or at least a preferred room. Not a chance. My room was the smallest room, overlooking the back of the hotel car park and a roof full of pipes and chimneys. I did complain and was moved to a slightly better room but the damage was already done. I also had dinner in the main restaurant, 800 USD for 4 people and we had to wait over an hour for our first course. The food was good though.

To top it off my car was badly damaged in the car park by someone forcing a bar into the door frame trying to break in. Not strictly the hotel's fault but you would think they would keep a better eye on the cars. Finally look out for the 100 USD fee if you need to cancel your booking.

So many things are wrong here; given the raw materials they have to work with (the area, the views, the golf course, the stunning old building etc.) it could be great.

I am gutted having to write this, I wanted so much to have one of the great hotels in the world in Scotland, it absolutely could be. Turnberry is a wonderful old lady, what a pity she is being let down by those looking after her.

I stayed for 2 nights with my wife and in-laws. We were booked into 2 Classic rooms on the 2nd floor.

Welcome/Check-in: The welcome was non existent, there was no door man or anyone to help remove the bags from the car. The check-in was friendly, quick and efficient. Rooms were made available to us, even though we arrived well before 3pm.

The rooms: Tastefully decorated in the old style, fantastic “Heavenly Bed”, large marble bathrooms, bright and airy. It’s ironic that we were probably staying on the only 2 nights of 2007 when air conditioning would have been welcomed!

Ailsa Bar: We took afternoon tea, the Whisky tasting and a few drinks in here on different occasions. Service and product both up to scratch, though I did pop in one morning to read the paper and have a coffee, and the staff member that was on approached every other guest except me even though I caught her eye a few times.

Turnberry Restaurant Dinner: We took the Creative (5 course) Tasting Menu with wine match for dinner on our first night. The food was exceptional, as was the service. The final 2 wine matches were a little disappointing in terms of the quality of the wines chosen. The food service slowed noticeably as the restaurant became fuller, increasing the pressure on the kitchen. Do not dine here if you want a speedy dinner, we lingered happily here for around 3 hours, any less and we would not have been able to enjoy the food and wine fully.

Turnberry Restaurant Breakfast: Again, the staff at breakfast are attentive and on the ball. There is a good selection on the continental buffet, and the hot a la carte selection is ok. It is a shame however, that you have to pay a premium for items such as kippers and pancakes or waffles that would normally be included anywhere else.

Stagioni: Had an enjoyable dinner here on the last night, looking out over the ocean from above the spa building. Food and service were top notch, and the speedier service would suit those who don’t wish to linger.

Tappie Toorie: A brasserie above the Club House with a good bar menu. Very relaxed and informal.

Spa: Pool/spa facilities excellent. The pool area is great (looking out over the ocean), and the massages were fantastic.

Pitch & Putt and the Tennis Court: Had a great time on both of these!

Outdoor Activities: A good selection, the archery was particularly fun!

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our break at Turnberry, I guess proving that you don’t have to be a golf fanatic to stay there! Yes, the hotel is pricey, and you pay through the nose for everything, but we had a fantastic time and would do it again!

My wife and I recently completed a 4 night stay at the Westin Turnberry. This resort exceeded our expectations on every front. The hotel sits high on a hill overlooking the ocean and the beautiful golf courses; the setting is jawdropping. The food and service our top notch and the staff througout the resort could not have been more affable. The golf especially the alisa course will take your breath away with its ocean vistas truly the pebble beach of Scotland! I have been to many of the world's great golf resorts and none of them have anything over this great propery. However , this is not the place to be if you're on a budget but if you can afford it you will bring home some teriffic memories.
