“Could be fantastic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

We recently spent a couple of days at the Marine having done so frequently in the past. This hotel is set in a superb location adjacent to the golf courses and looking out to Arran. The public areas of this hotel are relaxing and well maintained - similar with most bedrooms we have stayed in over the years. Have occasionally used leisure facilities and seem more than adequate. Cannot specifically comment on the spa facilities as we have never used but seem very popular.

In the main staff we have encountered have been polite and helpful.

The only issue that I have with this hotel is with variable quality of food specifically evening meal. The restuarant is situated with beautiful views over to Arran and in my opinion has potential to be a most excellent and attractive offering. That is unfortunately the not always the case. On our last visit my wife (vegetarian) ordered a pasta & vegetable main course. This was not up to expected standard - in summary pasta one would purchase from any retail outlet poorly/over cooked along with some mixed roasted veg & piece of goats cheese on top. Too much oil/butter basically ruined this dish.

The above is only one example. I feel that with correct training meals could be of a consistent and higher quality.

Despite all of above I would recommend this hotel and would use again. At present however only on b&b basis i.e until consistent improvements in food are noted.

We had a very enjoyable 3 days here, upgraded to a lovely suite with beautiful sea view but our parent room was at the back with no view and we had especially requested a walk in shower which in actual fact had a high step up to it and not handrails. We asked about changing them to a room with facilities for The Disabled but wre told those rooms only had wheelchair access and baths...confusing.
The food was great and the staff very helpful.

Room Tip: Rooms at front with seaview.

Booked in to The Marine Hotel for a "special offer" Spa Break weekend with friends. We had been there a couple of times before, many years ago and once during a big renovation. Found frontline staff very friendly and helpful. Room was a standard double and comfortable with views to the sea and Ayrshire coastline. As it was cold found I could turn radiator on myself to required temperature however remember to turn it off manually when going to bed as noisy heating system at night if you want to sleep!

In the restaurant dinner menu and food was excellent with good service. Spa treatments were also very good and staff friendly and helpful. Have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Room Tip: Recommend 2nd floor however remember to request if you prefer twin or standard room as standard room...

We spent two nights at this great hotel.
We got the two night spa package which included bottle of champagne on arrival, three course dinner both nights, 2 x 30min spa treatments each on the second day with lunch and breakfast on both mornings all for £350 which seemed a very reasonable price.

When we arrived we were greated by the concierge who opened the door and was very friendly. The recepionist was very nice and the place looked welcoming and traditional.

The Room - Our room was a standard double room which was of a small size but very nice. We were taken aback by the amazing sea view. We watched the sunset from our bed which was spectacular.

Food - Dinner was 5 star the first night, we had goats cheese and duck and orange pate to start followed by duck and steak for main course. the steak was perfection and would be amoungst the best ive ever had. then for desert we shared both the triple chocolate selection and sticky toffee puding with ice cream, both delicious. Breakfast was just as good, there was a cold buffet which included cereal, fresh fruit, juice and pastries. The waitress then took our order for hot food, we went for the full scottish breakfast but had the option of fish dishes and omelettes. Dinner the second evening we had salmon and sweet potato soup to start and the beef and pork for main, for desert we had chocolate mousse and vanilla cheesecake, all to high standard.

Spa - We both recieved a back, neck and shoulder massage and a mini facial as our 2 treatments but also had the options of a manicure or pedicure. There had been a mix up with bookings so they asked if we minded going in the couples room. This was actually better as you could share the experiance with one another and had we known it was there we would have requested it anyway. The massage was very relaxing as was the facial much to my surprise. They used Decleour products which my girlfriend seemed impressed with and swayed her to get the facial. We also had use of the swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna (unfortunately the steam room was out of order). After we finished in the Spa we were taken to the Bar/Lounge area where we were served soup and sandwiches for lunch. Very tasty and filling, exactly what we needed.

Overall the hotel was very enjoyable and would go back in a second. It was everything we hoped for and lucky for us it was a beautiful couple of days so we had a lovely walk on the beach which was only 5 minutes from the hotel and it made our day.

Highly recommended

Room Tip: Request a Sea view room makes the whole stay much more worthwhile.

My husband and I were given a 5pm voucher for this hotel at Christmas for overnight stay with breakfast and dinner.

Pros
Nice area of Troon, looks impressive as you drive up and if it was nicer weather we could have went a walk down to the beach. Also I didn't have any issues booking our stay for a Friday evening and front desk staff were friendly and helpful. I would recommend having dinner here it was lovely.

However..

Cons
*Time of dinner - We arrived at around 4pm only to be told first time we could be booked in for dinner was 8.45pm. I had asked about this when I booked and they just said to organise it when we arrive - had I known that I would have ended up with such a late dinner I would have called that day but i was led to believe there wouldnt be a problem.

*The room - we were in was room 1 - do not accept this room!! Room 1 is at back of hotel up stairs, along a corridor, up more stairs then down stairs - it was like a maze and last room in corridor , I actually got lost trying to find way back to main reception. On top of the obscure location it was ground floor which faced onto leisure complex car park so members of the public were walking past at eye level - absolutely no privacy I ended up shutting curtains as I felt like a
goldfish.

*Window - Our room window had a large crack on it - didn't feel this was acceptable for a 4 star hotel

*Heating - Room was freezing when we arrived as the window with the crack was not closed properly - after climbing on chair I managed to get it closed. Also heating in our room was off so I called reception and the thankfully out it on quickly, but corridors were cold too.

Overall, Even though staff were friendly and dinner was nice, I felt the room let it down. As a result of the poor room condition, location and late meal time (after reading on reviews on this), I don't know if this was because it was a 5pm deal, I wouldn't recommend staying here, there are nicer hotels in Scotland for weekend breaks.

Room Tip: Do not accept room 1

We stayed at the Marine Hotel on a Thursday in March, having booked our dinner, bed and breakfast package via a daily deals website for a fantastic price. We had read quite a few negative reviews of the hotel, and it would be fair to say our expectations weren't too high, but in the event, we were completely proven wrong.

The service we received from the moment we arrived was faultless. We were greeted and shown to reception by the very friendly concierge, before being checked in by an equally friendly member of the reception staff. The check-in was very quick and smooth and unlike some venues when you are made to feel a bit of a second class citizen for booking a special deal, this was barely mentioned.

The room we were given was warm and comfortable, albeit small, with a sea view. The décor was fairly traditional but didn’t feel dated. There were a good selection of Freeview channels on the large flat screen TV, and the bathroom was fairly basic but perfectly clean. Robes and slippers were waiting for us on the bed, which was a lovely touch.

We visited the leisure centre in the afternoon and although the facilities (pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi) were good, the experience was somewhat thwarted by all the screaming children who were occupying the pool. There didn’t seem to be any children around the rest of the hotel so we can only assume these were locals with a membership for the leisure centre. I would bear this in mind when visiting and perhaps pick a quieter time to enjoy the facilities (we went around 4pm.)

The highlight of our stay was definitely the meal we had in the Fairways restaurant. The service was discreet yet attentive, and the food was of a very high standard. The restaurant is large and there isn’t too much of an atmosphere. The setting is quite formal but your table is yours for the night and we didn’t feel at all rushed, which was lovely. We can’t fault the food at all. There was ample choice and the portions were generous.

Breakfast was a tad disappointing. Most of the options apart from the traditional fry-up carried a large supplement (an omelette was an extra £4(ish) pounds!) We were pleased to see a proper vegetarian breakfast on offer but when this arrived it was missing the vegetarian haggis that was listed on the menu, with only small amounts of the other ingredients present.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return if a good deal were to crop up. The location is beautiful and it would be nice to visit on a sunny day, as it was too cold for us to really appreciate the beach and lovely surroundings.
