“terrific!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

You get what you pay for! Gorgeous hotel with very good food and service. Future Scotland vacations would feel incomplete without another stay at the Torridon, Even 'though the weather was horrible ...

We ate at the Inn (couldn't manage another 6-course set menu) and the food there was very good. Also liked the pub atmosphere of the Inn before settling for the Whisky bar (more than 350 to chose from) at the luxurious hotel.

Breakfast was excellent. Nice and helpful staff.

My husband is a regular visitor to The Boathouse, part of the Torridon Hotel estate. This year he persuaded me to join him - but as luck would have it we only stayed one of the seven nights booked, because of a medical problem, but I can't wait to go back. The house itself is very secluded, on the edge of the loch, down its own private road and with a jetty. There's a large seating area, with fantastic views, a wood-burning stove, satellite tv, dvd and cd player; a really well equipped and spacious kitchen with microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge, and wine fridge. Upstairs are two tastefully furnished double bedrooms, the master bedroom with glorious views, and the elegant bathroom. From the terrace outside you can feed the pine martens at night (they snapped up the raisins we left out!), and otters can be sighted. A generous welcome pack is provided, with all the essentials like olive oil, condiments, sugar, preserves. But make sure you bring any food you need for the week, as it isn't a stroll to the local shops and their stock is obviously limited. Wouldn't like to go there later than May, because of the midges - make sure you pack insect repellant, even in the spring. But this is truly a magical destination for couples or families, perfect for walking and wildlife, or just relaxing and soaking up the wonderful scenery and the luxury of this beautiful boathouse.

Thank you for your review. It is such a shame that you managed only to stay 1 day but you managed to take a number of good photos even still. The Boat House is a great gem of a location and this year we have seen 48 out of 52 weeks sold and we are already nearly full Mar-Aug 2013. We look forward to welcoming you and your husband back on another occasion when hopefully you will be able to experience he full benefit. Regards, Dan & Rohaise

We first stayed here in 2008 and have extremely fond memories of our stay so he had not hesitation in booking a stay here again on a recent trip to the west coast.

The idyllic loch-side setting and the historic character of the building has been mentioned in numerous reviews on here so I won't go into too much detail here.

Two improvements (not that they were bad first time around!) we noticed were the quality of service and food. We were really impressed with the staff here who were attentive, friendly and were formal without being stuffy.

We dined in the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast and found the quality of both meals excellent. Both featured locally sourced produce cooked in imaginative ways, something of which we always approve of!

I would highly recommend this hotel. Yes, it is expensive, but you do get good value for your money.

We were very impressed with everything at The Torridon.
Beautifully appointed bedroom with a magnificent view of the loch and mountains.
Excellent food served by very professional staff. Immediately felt welcome upon arrival and nothing was rushed. This suited us very well, as the whole point of our break was in order to relax and chill. Our weather was amazing and there is good hill walking in the area. No need to use the car and helpful for burning off some of the calories. We had a little disappointing experience with the grumpy barman in the Inn, but maybe he had reason. A shame as it meant we did not try the food there, we just ate in the hotel again. We would love to return some day, although we might need to wait until someone treats us again as it is rather pricey.

Room Tip: Room 14 was really spacious and the shower room was in the turret- amazing! The view was fantastic.

We had stayed at The Torridon in 2010 and loved every minute of it. However, this time we just did not “get it”. Management seems to have lost its way. We felt the evening service in the bar and restaurant was generally poor. Over and above that, however, the experience was rendered unacceptable for us by the cocky, formulaic, banal wittering of numerous members of staff. The previous atmosphere, of a friendly family-owned hotel, was entirely absent. This led us to dine in the restaurant on only the first evening of our stay. We made other arrangements for the last two evenings.

An inappropriate tone of self-congratulation is reflected in the questionnaire in the bedroom, with its references to exclusive luxury and the personal touch. Examples of the matters on which the hotel seeks feedback are “...What exceeded your expectations at the Torridon?” and “Who went the extra mile for you?”

Down in the bar, things were different. The barman chatted to the one other couple present, then just walked out without acknowledging our arrival. It took too long for the menus and drinks to come, then for us to be invited through to the dining room. Then we sat at the table waiting for the food. We finally started to consume the food we had ordered about an hour and a quarter after we had first arrived in the bar. The staff made the same formulaic remarks when serving every dish and then again when collecting every plate.

And so it went on. Much later, one of these young characters asked if we would like coffee in the bar after our meal. We said we would. We duly went though, to find the bar deserted and no coffee. Apparently the barman had been waiting for us to come, before ringing for it. At that point, we said that the quality of the service was a matter for the manager.

Once in the mood for it, we noticed other things. They hoovered while the guests were having breakfast. The cupboard in our room was so worn that the chip-board was plainly visible. The window sill was rotten.

I should add in fairness that, the following day, Rohaise Rose-Bristow, one of the owners of the business, did contact us to find out what the problem had been. However, she explained that most of the customers give very favourable feedback. She said that the hotel actually intends to serve its fine dining menu over the course of “a couple of hours”. There is apparently a quicker three course option we could have asked for instead, of which I had not been aware. She offered us a complimentary meal in the restaurant the next night. However, there was no point in persisting: the hotel has gone down a certain road. When we were handed the bill, we found that the hotel had in fact decided that it would charge us in full for the meal and wine, as was of course its legal right and entitlement. We shall not be returning.

We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay and that you no longer get what we are about. We did want you to enjoy your return stay with us but despite our teams effort it just did not work for you. From the moment that we escorted you to your table that evening, admittedly 20 mins late, the stay was not going to be enjoyed. We tried to recover the situation and win you round but this was not to be. Your personal comments about the staff are in no way shared by the majority of our guests or the other reviewers here and we are confident that they offer a professional, friendly and engaging service, liked by most our guests. We have to admit that we can’t please all of the people all of the time….but we do try. Regards Dan & Rohaise

What a place to stay, we shall return, had a free upgrade on our room, food was superb,
This hotel is expensive and the quailty of service and accommodation, as you would expect, reflects this.
The location is wonderful lots of walks, climbs & drives, whatever suits your needs. A drive to Applecross along the coast road, have lunch here, then drive back over the mountains, is a must, the views are stunning.
Have only given very good for sleep quality as our first night we had very disurb sleep due to a fire door banging, couldn't locate where it was coming from, my husband went to look, there is no-one on duty during the night and we didn't feel it was that much of an emergency to ring the number you are given. However in the morning when we rang reception the matter was very quickly sorted out and the next two nights slept like a log.
Our room had lovely views over the loch was very large, with windows to front & sides, armchairs to sit and look at the views, very large bathroom with stand alone bath and separate shower,

Utterly outstanding experience. The staff (many young and international and all very professional), the wecome and the meals were all well above expectations. The rooms are comfortable and convenient. And the location is of course fantastic.

We'd recommend
- the Hebridean Whale Cruises trip to the Shiant Islands from Gairloch (prepare to get wet)
- hiking anywhere (get good detailed maps)
- allowing plenty of time to get to Skye (or anywhere!)
- whisky with porridge to start the day

Sorry not to find more sailing or sea fishing

It has been (OMG) 50 years since I was last in this part of the world (Shieldaig), and while it is all a bit more modern of course, it is still isolated empty and beautiful

Thank you for your review. It is great to see guests enjoy the area and as you have explained there is so much to do. Sea fishing is available up at Gairloch (next the whale cruises) as well as fly fishing and sailing although limited is available at Lochcarron sailing club. We are pleased that the staff looked after you so well and that the food exceeded your expectations. Please don't leave it 50 years before returning. Regards, Dan & Rohaise
