Girlfriend and I stayed here for a night in June 2007, when I booked it for a nice weekend getaway. I was looking for a castle hotel with a splash of luxury and a dash of atmosphere. The Mansfield Castle is certainly a lovely building but I don't think we really got the luxury, the atmosphere or the castle. The room was very pleasant but no better than I've had in many bed and breafasts - small TV, tea and coffee faciltiies, good en-suite bathroom - but nothing particularly luxurious.
Inside, the Castle was nice if a bit worn in a places, but it had the feel more of a country house than a castle (probably because the Castle was built in the 1870s, so it's not a medieval fortress with thick stone walls or narrow staircases). Breakfast the following morning was very nice (although the haggis was poor) but the evening meal in the bar was a bit disappointing ('rare' steak cooked 'medium' and no brown sauce!!! What a disaster!).
All in all a perfectly respectable place to spend a night but it didn't do anything for me in terms of atmosphere or luxury. If you're looking to stay in a castle this may not be the place to go.
