“OK hotel, could be better.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

We stayed in this hotel as part of an Urquhart's coach trip. The hotel has some connection with the company. The setting and the staff are fine but there is room for improvement. Some people didn't like the fact that they had to go outside in the rain to reach the bar and other facilities. The worst thing was the constantly scalding hot water. As coach parties often include a number of elderly and disabled people, it is only a matter of time before someone gets burnt. No proper shower in our room, just a rubber thing with bits of plastic falling off. Now even the scummiest of third world hotels usually manages to provide a proper shower. The walls were thin and the remote for the TV was not working.

We were all crammed into a corner of the dining room, while a large conservatory area was left empty. Presumably this was for the convenience of the waiting staff. It became uncomfortably hot and stuffy as well as being noisy and cramped. The food was adequate, we never went hungry.

The bars and lounges could be excellent if they were properly furnished and decorated, but at the moment they are uncomfortable and unwelcoming.

However, the spa and swimming pool were excellent, and the gym was very well equipt. There were showers and one of them worked properly.

This place is quite adequate for a coach trip as you only spend a few nights there.

We stayed at this hotel for Runrig's 40th and were very disappointed. We were in the main building Room was small, single beds were small in width,Television did not work, the shower was a rubber hose that you attached to the taps. If anyone else was using water the pressure dropped so much you were left with a soapy head with no way of rinsing. In the end I used the plastic cup to rinse. Second morning I tried the leisure centre and the shower almost scalded me because there was no thermostatic control on the shower.
Breakfast was VERY average. Did not try lunch or evening meal as it seemed very boring. Bar closed at 11pm ! what a chance missed all those happy Runrig fans desperate on some sustenance after 3 hours jumping up and down in a field.
The hotel needs updating BIG STYLE.

Room Tip: Check the shower out before accepting the room

Thankfull was staying here for work so just needed somewhere to sleep. Stayed in the 'spa' section of hotel but whole place was very dated, complaints included a worse than useless shower, wafer thin walls, tiny wall mounted tv and wifi that never connected.... Didn't dare try the restaurant for evening meal!

Very disappointing stay in Mackays hotel last weekend, Hotel was full of guests going to a RunRig Concert on the Saturday night so all looking for a good weekend away, and the Hotel could have really made the most of the opportunity, but both nights they closed the bar at 11pm even for residents.

The breakfast was poor, and the evening meal so uninspiring that we didn't even try it !

The facilities were basic, I cant remember the last time I saw a rubber shower which fitted to the taps of the bath!!, the quilt cover was a dirty cream so didn't even brighten up quite a drab room, which for some reason had a buzzing noise all night !! had a TV in the room which didn't work, so all in all very disappointing

Room Tip: if you want a good room, choose another hotel

Managed to get a last minute midweek break. Stayed in the Travel lodge part of the hotel. Was given a family room. Nice large modern en suite room. Beds were the comfiest I have ever encountered out of all the hotels I have ever stayed in. Manageress was professional in all the dealings I had with her, as were her staff. Everything about the hotel and leisure suite was explained on arrival. Dinner and breakfast were more than adequate, not 5* but then nor is the hotel or the prices. I would stay here again for a mid week break.

Room Tip: Travel lodge annex part of the hotel

Went with other half, my mother, an aunt and an uncle, on one of the Urquhart tours ( bus driver was brilliant btw ) We knew it was a bit dated - but not actually buying the place nor choosing the décor to take home so we where prepared to live with it for a few days.
Found it to be clean, meals filling enough and with a vegetarian choice each meal, not top of the range but we cleared our plates most nights, asked for a salad the last night and must say was one of the best I have ever tasted.
The small spa offered changing rooms, showers, pool, sauna and steam room and small gym (although Jacuzzi was out of use when we where there ) had the spa to myself Friday evening , shared it with hubby on the Sunday afternoon, Mother, Aunt and Uncle got the pool to themselves Sunday morning - although the added bonus being the use of a shower for them as the en suite was bath with small hose attachment for hair washing ( which is not great for older peoples with stiff joints who can't get into said bath admittedly - but it didn't stop them from having fun.
The evening entertainment was featured around the 50's /60's each night and this was right down their street, and had them up having a wee dance ( despite replacement hips, arthritis, heart stents and gout between them all lol ) The bar staff where friendly and all the serving staff where approachable and ensured any specifics - cream, no cream, extra sauce ect.
The manageress did seem rushed, but was pleasant enough and did check the room when one of our party mentioned a concern about the toilet seat.
The town / village is small but lovely and has a pipe band playing in Summer, each Sat evening in the square, and one or two places to visit ( touchstone maze , eaglestone, childhood museum ) whilst you are there.
Our trip included some excursions to other places so kept us busy and got us out and about.
We also enjoyed each other's company and did not take things too seriously, I think to go just as a couple it may not have been as enjoyable, but would recommend going with friends.
Overall if you paid to go to a youth hostel where you may have to share a room let alone a bathroom with others, paid for transport to the hotel, the trips, breakfast, dinner, visit to a swimming pool, sauna and steam room all separately it would come to more than we paid for this so reflecting on that it was worth it and gave us a weekend away doing different things and keeping active, while catching up with some of the family.
Would I go back there again ? - I think it's one of the things you do once to see what it's like and to visit somewhere different. - ~As part of a package it's acceptable and might well be better enjoyed in a cluster of friends rather than as couples or solo's.

The manager welcomed us on board the coach and was allocating the rooms, not everyone was paying attention and I could understand her frustration. The hotel was clean and tidy although the decoration was a bit aged and not every room had a proper shower. The staff were courteous, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good and the dinners were good but not great, love the little touch of fruit in the salad / side salad. Not a fan of the boiled potatoes. Excellent leisure annex and entertainment although the televisions have not entered the digital age.
All in all an enjoyable break with a few minor niggles.
