We've been coming back to this hotel for years and returned again this September. The hotel is in the crofting village of Achiltibuie which is set opposite the Summer Isles and reached down a single track road which winds through the Inverpolly Nature Reserve. The grounds are surrounded by hedges that keep the worst of the weather at bay but can obscure the view. Next door is a good bar / coffee shop that is run by the hotel.
Primarily we go for the food which is of a very high standard. The chef is very consistent and much of the produce is grown or caught locally. The hotel runs a hydroponicum (giant greenhouse) and fish & game feature on the menu. The style is modern continental with a Scottish leaning. There is a set menu but dietary requirements are easily met if the owners are forewarned. The meal starts with canapes & drinks in the lounge where guest gather & chat before the meal starts. We service is ready we are ushered to our tables. The lucky ones get views out across the bay towards the islands and the sunsets into the sea..
At the table is the wine. As the guests already know what is for supper they can choose an appropriate wine for the meal. This order is given a couple of hours before the meal and this allows the hotel to decant and prepare the wine so that it is at optimum condition when you sit down. Wines that need to breath or be chilled have done so and are ready to drink immediately.
The food is always five courses and the guests can decide whether to have cheese before or after the dessert which is a nice touch.
We've stayed in most of the rooms in the hotel and choose the room at the back for this trip. It is a room on it's own next to a little unused lounge. The view is of the kitchen yard but I'm not to fussed by views. The room has an enormous bath in which I can lie out straight. There is a little noise from the kitchen but that finishes after service so isn't too intrusive and the bathroom and the size of the room are good compensation. for being the cheapest room in the hotel. The other rooms have better views, more privacy and can be larger but none have that bath.
The staff are always polite, attentive and make you feel welcome,. They are likely to enquire after your stay, your plans and to make recommendations about where to visit. In short they take an interest in their guests.
My only regret is that it'll be another year before I get back there.
