“Rude and unprofessional”

Inchnacardoch Lodge

Jan 5, 2008

The website does not accurately reflect the condition and ambience of the hotel. They were obviously short staffed as our room was not cleaned during our stay and the food was basic and of poor quality.

When checking out we mentioned to the owner the poor service and our general unhappiness of our stay. This was meet with hostility and rudeness which we found upsetting.

The owners are obviously out of their depth running this hotel and made our stay very unpleasant.

We decided to take a short break up to the Scottish Highlands and after much searching on the internet, found the Inchnacardoch Lodge Hotel. The website looked fabulous....modern facilities, warm and welcoming. However, we soon discovered that artistic licence had been used in its creation.

The hotel generally seems old fashioned and lacking atmosphere. Full praise to Jan and Bob who are a lovely couple and very welcoming, but the place needs modernising. Its a lovely building and has so much potential. The views from the Dining room are stunning.

We ate in the restaurant only once...the food was overpriced (£15 for lasagna and chips!), bland and tasteless. It wasn't helped by the sound of the Chef coughing constantly whilst you were waiting for your food to be served. It was a shame that there was no background music to give the Dining room some atmosphere. It seems that most guests eat there once and then go to either The Bothy or The Lock Inn to eat.

Unfortunately Breakfast was no better. It's a shame you have to order it the night before and specify what time you would like to eat. Why can't they allow you to make the decision in the morning? The sausages were poor quality and the scrambled egg dry and stodgy. Bland and tasteless. Such a shame.

The room was adequate - again though it was old fashioned and in need of modernisation. The power shower was no more than a trickle! £100 per room per night B&B really is too much...should be no more than £70 per room B&B.

“Excellent hospitality”

We stayed here for 1 night with our 18 month old daughter. She spent most of the time following Jet the dog around the hotel and he was definitely the highlight of her trip.

The rooms are old fashioned but are very spacious with very comfortable beds and a view of the Loch. We ate in the dining room and the food was fantastic they were also very accommodating with our fussy daughter.

Jan and Bob are fantastic hosts and are very knowledgeable about Scotland they made us feel very welcome and we would definitely recommend this hotel to friends. The only negative was having to order breakfast the night before but only a little niggle.

“The best hotel of the trip”

We spent three weeks in Scotland, and we booked hotels 'on the fly' by simply calling ahead a day or two. We had seen mention of this hotel somewhere, and we wanted to stay near Loch Ness -- and that is how we selected it. When we arrived, the first impression was really thatt his was an impressive place -- a huge stone mansion set back from the Augustus - Inverness road, with a forest in the back and a wide green field in front. The place is an old hunting lodge, and the ground floor is now a very nice 'drawing room', a wonderful dining room, and a small but very attractive bar. But the best is Ian and Bob and Bob's wife who run the place. They are knowledgeable about the loch, Scotland in general, and Scottish politics. And they will talk with you for hours if you wish. Just ask Bob why there are few pictures of Queen Elizabeth in Scotland! The rooms are all upstairs, all with a view of the loch, and all are comfortable and large. The stairs are steep. The food in the dining room is gourmet with a strong emphasis on Scotland. The very best is the sticky toffee pudding. Everything is made fresh. Breakfasts are large and truly 'full Scottish breakfasts'. Overall, I would say that this was our best hotel for the three weeks in Scotland. There really is no negatives about the lodge -- except (for some) that it is well out of Augustus (not walking distance). But who cares with this view of Loch Ness.

We stayed at the Inchnacardoch at the end of a tour of the North of Scotland.

Whilst we did not have a bad experience staying at this hotel, it was fine, we do not share the extremely positive views of the other reviewers of this hotel.

We had dinner at the hotel and would consider the food just average and overpriced. I had the duck breast which came with a “homemade” sauce. The sauce was pretty thin and tasteless and was poured over the mashed potatoes rather than the duck. The duck was overcooked, destroying much of its flavour. I would not eat there again.

Breakfast has to be ordered the night before with a warning on the order form that if you do not place your order the night before then it is presumed that you don’t want breakfast! You also have to specify a time that you will arrive for breakfast. Not very accommodating! Why does this hotel operate such a system when other establishments are able to operate perfectly well taking the order at the time people arrive for breakfast? My breakfast was not very good; scrambled egg with crispy bacon on a panini. The meal did not live up to its description – the bacon was not at all crispy and the panini and the scrambled egg were very dry and, once again, pretty tasteless – the most tasteless bacon I had on my holiday. For the first time on my trip I did not finish the breakfast!

There is a 2% surcharge when paying by credit card; this charge is automatically added to your bill even when you have indicated that you will pay by debit card! You are warned in the confirmation e-mail that this charge will be made. Why does this hotel feel that it has to add such a charge when other hotels are able to factor such charges into their overall costs? The confirmation also warns, in multi-colour, of other additional charges should you break any of their rules; once again not a very friendly introduction to the hotel.

Our room was comfortable although the en-suite was extremely small with a certain amount of manoeuvring required to get in and out of the door!

The owners were very friendly and welcoming which was a great relief following the rather unfriendly confirmation e-mail. However, they need to get rid of the system of pre-ordering breakfast and the disgraceful surcharge for using a credit card i.e. they need to move into the 21st Century hotel industry!
