We spent three weeks in Scotland, and we booked hotels 'on the fly' by simply calling ahead a day or two. We had seen mention of this hotel somewhere, and we wanted to stay near Loch Ness -- and that is how we selected it. When we arrived, the first impression was really thatt his was an impressive place -- a huge stone mansion set back from the Augustus - Inverness road, with a forest in the back and a wide green field in front. The place is an old hunting lodge, and the ground floor is now a very nice 'drawing room', a wonderful dining room, and a small but very attractive bar. But the best is Ian and Bob and Bob's wife who run the place. They are knowledgeable about the loch, Scotland in general, and Scottish politics. And they will talk with you for hours if you wish. Just ask Bob why there are few pictures of Queen Elizabeth in Scotland! The rooms are all upstairs, all with a view of the loch, and all are comfortable and large. The stairs are steep. The food in the dining room is gourmet with a strong emphasis on Scotland. The very best is the sticky toffee pudding. Everything is made fresh. Breakfasts are large and truly 'full Scottish breakfasts'. Overall, I would say that this was our best hotel for the three weeks in Scotland. There really is no negatives about the lodge -- except (for some) that it is well out of Augustus (not walking distance). But who cares with this view of Loch Ness.
