“A wonderful B&B in a quiet location with great views and easy access to top-notch food and drink”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2009

Mary is an extremely welcoming, helpful and friendly hostess, with top-notch culinary skills and accommodation to match! She made us feel very much at home despite our late arrival without a booking, and provided plenty of local knowledge for our evening entertainment and further travels in the area.

The room was spacious, well appointed and perfectly clean, with a fantastic en-suite featuring a lovely shower. Breakfast is served in the large conservatory, giving a lovely view out over the countryside. The breakfast was absolutely incredible, with a wide choice including full Scottish, and eggs Balmoral (smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.) Mary is happy to cater for anyone, including my vegetarian fiancee.

Tramps is a short walk from the "centre" of Drumnadrochit, with a great local pub (Fiddler's) in which we spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening. By all accounts, there are similarly excellent hotels and restaurants in the locality. There is also a small supermarket on the corner of the road with a cash point.

We booked this B&B via an agent as part of our Great Glen Way accomodation plan. The B&B is positioned about 800 metres off the main road as you enter Drumnadrochit & is about 7 minutes walk from the main cafe/coffee shop & eateries. It is abosolutely beautiful inside & the view from the conservatory/breakfast room is stunning. It more than makes up for the extra 5 minutes walk from the village. Our room was very comfortable & the en-suite very spacious & contemporary. Mary, the lady who runs Tramps is very bright & chatty & provides a beautiful breakfast selection. This B&B is a real gem & is excellent value for money.

I found the owners very welcoming, the accommodation of a very high standard and overall the best I have stayed in.The home made scones definately hit the spot after a hard day walking!

We stayed here for one night during a Lands End - John O' Groats cycle, and it was great. Mary is a fantastic host, serving up home-made scones as soon as we got through the door. Room was great, and a cooked breakfast to write home about...even the haggis! Also very grateful to husband Alan who hacksawed our broken cycle lock off for us!

As others have said, don't take the name literally. Mary at Tramps B & B is a very gracious hostess. My husband and I had been in country for 10 days before making our way to Tramps. It was the best shower and bed we had seen since our arrival in Scotland. The room and bathroom were clean and spacious and the setting extremely quiet and peaceful. I would definitely book Tramps again!

I stayed at Tramps having gone up for a wedding in the area. A friend booked the accomodation and I was a little surprised at the name "Tramps"!! However this was excellent B&B accomodation. My room was very clean and the welcome from Mary was very warm. She even gave us a lift down to the village once which was very kind.

Breakfast was a choice of Scottish Cooked, Continental or a Salmon based (can't remember what that was called). I had the Continental on both mornings and it was substantial, good strong caffitiere coffee, and choice of cereal to start, then toast, a warm croissant and nice roll, a plate with cheese and ham (it was packaged slice type cheese and thin ham, although a small selection type cheese like edam, or cheddar). Also there were a few grapes and nice yoghurt. It was a filling breakfast and was overall nice.

I had a twin room (although had to pay a single supplement) which I think made it £35 a night rather than £25 which I guess it would have been otherwise. The room contained the usual tea making facilities, a small 14inch tv, bedside lamps and tables, adequate storage a couple of chairs. The ensuite bathroom was spotlessless clean, nice shower and had towels and soap supplied (no shower gel or shampoo).

The room was of a reasonable size it didn't feel too cramped and the bed was extremely comfortable with a very cozy Duvet. I had a great night's sleep both nights.

I believe the number 17 bus actually goes right past Tramps, this was something we didn't realise and got off in Drumnadrochit and Mary also told us sometimes the driver will make a detour so possibly worth asking the driver if they go past Tramps.

Outdoor Walks

If walking back from tramps, turn left by the "Morning, Noon and Night Store" (a Co-op) walk down the road as if you're going to Drum. When you reach Pitkerrald road turn left and you can follow wooden signage to nice walks around the local forest. There is a Red and Green routes which vary in difficulty. I chose the "Milton Walk" which was the harder route and took less than an hour, a bit of uphill and nice walk although no breathtaking views.

Food
If coming from tramps you turn right instead of left at the junction with Pitkerrald road you can walk up Kilmore Road, for about half a mile until you see a blue building with "Hotel" in big letters on the lefthand side. Can't remember the name but they serve good food, the traditional bar isn't the best decorated but the real ale is nice and the welcome and food was very good.

  • Liked — Extremely Warm Welcome, Clean Comfortable room
  • Disliked — No Internet access, Mobile Reception limited (although it is the Highlands!).

We stayed at this place one night while hiking the Great Glen Way.
The house is located in a most pleasent and tranquil area of the Drumnadrochit village.
The service by owner Mary Beedham was most friendly, rooms very comfortable and superbly clean, big and good breakfast, but no Internet.
There is a small general store down the street to stock up before the hike. Nearby is a very fine Indian restaurant.
