Owner description: An atmospheric ruin overlooking the dark waters of Loch Ness, this dramatic castle has a long and bloody history. Once one of Scotland's mightiest strongholds, Urquhart's strategic location gave it a key role in the Scottish battle for independence. It came under the control of Robert the Bruce before a 150-year power struggle between the Stewart dynasty and the MacDonald Lords of the Isles.

“Great effects with the video”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

I appreciated how the guides look into the details of crafting your visit with a short tour of the mini museum and then watch the video, then venturing out to see the castle ruins for ourselves. The entire experience has been great!

“The Best Castle....EVA”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

I loved this place. Full of history but even better what a fatastic place to take photos. The Loch, The Castle, The Highlands and the grounds - what a fantastic place. The shop and cafe were good value too. You never know - you might even see Nessie herself!!!!

The castle is in a beautiful location with views up and down the Loch. The short video and information posted throughout the sights provided lots of great information.

“Worth The Visit? You Bet.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

Urquhart Castle has a long and wonderful history. While mostly just castle ruins it is very easy to get lost in imaging the history of the castle.

This was my second visit the castle in 20 years. The first was in 1992. I found a newly built visitor center this time which has the normal shops and café. Also, there is a movie that highlights some of the castles history and while most movies of this type are a bit ripe and cheesy this one I thought worked rather well.

Be sure to talk to a docent to get additional details while touring the castle. The real fun is learning about details that aren’t in the movie. Well worth a visit and lots of fun stuff to do in the area.
