“ Stunning hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

Visited this hotel for a valentines offer with my husband in the offer was a 5 course meal this was stunning, there was a set menu but still lots of choice.
Room- we were offered an upgrade of our room when we arrived the room had a 4 poster bed, jacuzzi bath and a wood burner, room was huge and beautiful.
Breakfast in the morning again was really goid cant fault this hotel, lovely open fire in the main bar which was very relaxing. Would highly recommend this hotel.

I've stayed here previously and thought of it as a good pub / restaurant with rooms. Prices seemed to have escalated but standards haven't. If my room looked anything like the one on the Tripadvisor site I may not have been disappointed! I didn't think it was great for the price. Spacious but very dated.

Dinner was enjoyable but again not great value. I thought the wine list was very expensive - £45 for a Fleurie, £59 for a Rully. Wow.

Loved the bar. Great range of whisky and real ale on tap.

Staff were friendly and helpful.

Still a great pub with rooms, but I don't think the total offering matches the prices charged.

Decided to stop at Dornoch Castle for a coffee and maybe a cake. Firstly, no-one seemed to know if we could have something to eat or even a snack. Secondly, asking for a coffee or hot chocolate at the bar, appeared to be against the law after 5 and thirdly we were told how the 'kitchen wasn't able' to provide this simple request (despite the machine being right next to him at the bar) by a disagreeable, unaccommodating, ill-disposed Glaswegian gentleman who really looked as if he never wanted to be there in the first place. Very disappointing service.

Musty, 1960s decor, very dingy.people upstairs could have been in the room with us as we were aware of every step they took plus their plumbing knocked loudly at 6am when upstairs turned on the water. The bathroom was badly in need of refurbishing, the side of the bath a piece of board. We were told we booked a lovely garden room when in fact the room was beside a car park with a window that did not open onto an unkempt weed patch, When checking out we mentioned our lack of satisfaction, to be told " everyone says that"! said with a smile!
There is little accommodation in Dornoch to cater for the large numbers of golfers attracted to the area. As a result this hotel does not have to make an effort and it does not! We traveled in Ireland and Scotland for 6 weeks this was our worst hotel experience. Surprising considering the photographs and reviews posted.

Room Tip: Charming town. Stay in other accommodation than the Dornoch Castle Hotel.

Stayed here for one night, after a wet ride on the motorbike around the far north east of Scotland, we arrived dripping wet. The room we had was vast, and the staff were very attentive and helpful.
Food wise we shunned the rather pricy restaurant and went for a walk around the town center - another review to come on that.. - back to the castle bar after the meal we enjoyed a few drink in the bar before getting a fabulous night's sleep. Breakfast was in the main restaurant - all the hushed conversations - looking out across the garden. The food was lovely and portions generous.

This hotel was conveniently situated for our one week stay and the welcome from the staff was excellent. In fact all the staff at the hotel were very helpful and contributed to an enjoyable stay. We had dinner once, and enjoyed it very much although the dinner was a little over priced for what it was and compared with other restaurants in Dornoch. The twin rooms were a little tight on space, and again rather expensive when compared with other hotels that we have stayed in of equal quality. The staff create a very pleasant ambience.

We stayed at the Castle Hotel for two nights in July and were quite happy with our choice of accommodation in Dornoch. The warm and welcoming staff and very attentive service was great after a long drive. Room was comfortable and warm (which you seem to require here even in summer!) and the plush robes provided were a nice touch. The dinner on our first night was a bit of a let down. The pork loin and chicken were both over done. Best part of the meal was the entrée bread with both a chive butter and olive spread. The breakfast that was included was very good and so substantial that we couldn't finish it. Again, service was friendly and attentive. Great to start out with a good meal before a big day of walking or golfing. Internet access is good and even though it doesn't work in the rooms having a large comfy lounge room to quietly do emails was enjoyable. Alternative is to sit in the bar where the wi-fi is available as well.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Castle is almost certainly on the site of the original Bishop's Palace of St Gilbert, who founded the Cathedral in the early 13th Century, but it is not known when the oldest surviving part of the present building was put up. In 1557 the Palace was given to the Earl of Sutherland by his brother in law, Bishop Robert Stewart. It is clear that the building was erected before that date and may well be of the late 15th Century. The earliest surviving documentary evidence of the Palace is the Charter of 1557 by which the Bishop Robert appointed the Earl of Sutherland and his heirs to be hereditary Constables for Dornoch "situated in the Irish (Gaelic speaking) Country among the wild, unbridled, untamed and savage Scots". The appointment was made by the Bishop who was alarmed by the progress of the Lutheran doctrines and wished to safeguard the property of the Church by putting it temporarily in the care of his relations. He cannot have visualised that the Church would never own its property again. When the building passed into private hands in 1922 it was considerably modernised. Further extensive work was carried out after it became a hotel in 1947. Great care has been taken, however, to maintain the character of the Castle as a stately, historic and comfortable residence. This work continues now with the new owners who took over in June of 2000. They have gone some way to restore some of the former glory to this magnificent and fascinating historic building. ... more   less
