I wish I'd read some of the reviews here. To be honest I wish we'd sorted out our accommodation earlier and tried the castle instead. The owners are clearly trying on some levels with The Eagle, and the staff were pleasant enough, but there were too many important details letting it down.
As many have pointed out, the room itself was shabby and dated. I can put up with dated decor but it felt a bit grubby – most importantly I wasn't convinced the bed linen had been cleaned, and the bathroom smelled of drains. Our children's room was spacious, but very spartan, most worryingly the window opened straight out without a lock (the children discovered that). Also some bizarre wiring going on which, had the children been younger would have been a slight worry. Noisy at night time too.
The food – again on one hand you feel you should applaud them for trying but it doesn't come off. I ordered a burger with blue cheese. Came with cheddar, asked for it to be changed, and it came back with some of the cheddar scraped off and blue cheese on. My wife asked for a cajun burger, what she was given was a bland microwave chicken burger – no spice. What's worse we've all had upset stomachs since.
It's tough times and you don't want to do someone's business down, but then again we don't feel we had value for money, and furthermore it's clear they need to up their game quickly on the rooms and in the kitchen to stay competitive.
