Having stayed at Eddrachilles twice before, the last occasion in 2007, we decided to call in on spec this time and were pleased to find that a room overlooking Badcall Bay was available for the two nights we requested. In the glorious weather that we experienced, there can't be many better locations for a hotel than this. To wander in the garden and around the shoreline looking for birds, seals or even otters before returning for evening drinks and dinner is our idea of heaven! True, the atmosphere is a bit quieter and a bit more formal than some other places nearby but this reflects the fact that it is primarily a residents' bar and hotel, where atmosphere depends mainly on the "mix" of guests each evening. On this occasion, we enjoyed good conversation with others who, like us, really appreciate the remote feel of the far north west.
Our room, in addition to the stunning views (ignore an earlier comment about a fish processing factory), though on the small side was perfectly adequate, comfortable and well-equipped and we slept well to the sound of owl and cuckoo. Breakfast was cooked to order the first morning, buffet style the second. Both were fine, although perhaps some yogurt and a greater variety of choices would be welcome. Evening meals are chosen from a short menu that makes good use of local seafood and changes each day. Again, our meals were fine, including lovely homestyle beef casserole and seafood curry the second night. The wine list is particularly interesting. Richard, the owner, certainly carries much of the front-of-house responsibility and we saw few other staff. As on our last visit, we found him very helpful, friendly and with a dry sense of humour. All in all, we recommend that others seek out what has rightly been called a gem of a place and help to build the reputation and popularity that it deserves.
