“Our Favourite Stay in Scotland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

This is our third visit to Achray House, from Oz! Each occasion has been special for a different reason but our recent visit was special because we loved the current dining style. Just before your chosen dining time you can enjoy your pre-dinner drink in the lounge (by the fire in winter) whilst you select from the menu (unless you have already chosen the six-course tasting menu which is a must-try for one of your overnight stays). Relax with your drink until you are called to your table for dinner (the menu is excellent), then return to the lounge for tea/coffee. Heavenly!
Situated overlooking Loch Earn you could well spend your days photographing the ever-changing landscape. (On an earlier summer-time visit you could watch the sun set over the Loch from the dining room.) With very courteous and friendly hosts and staff, this is really a wonderful experience, worth the flight!

Thanks for your kind review, and I trust the journey back to Australia was uneventful.

You have summed up succinctly what Jane and I are trying to achieve at Achray House, and we look forward to you and your husband's fourth visit.

Stayed one night for taster menu deal from Itison £99 for dinner B & B for two. Room 6 which was described as "mountain view" was clean, spacious, modern and well equipped, with a large comfortable double bed. Before going for our "Taster menu" we had drinks served to us as we relaxed in the peaceful lounge with a welcoming log fire and comfortable leather sofas. When our table was ready we were taken through and the meal was served with each course explained by polite and helpful staff, course proportions were ample enough to give an adequate "taster" while still allowing us both to enjoy all that was laid before us. Individually each of the six courses was an example of fine dinning of the highest level combined into excellent and highly satisfying dining experience. At breakfast the next morning the choices were comprehensive and of the same high standard served the previous evening with beautiful views across Lock Earn from the breakfast dining room. Come check out time the drinks bill was very modest especially considering the high standards of food and service received , this was our third visit to Achray House and we both look forward to our next.

Thanks for your generous review, particularly your comments on the taster menu, which has become a regular feature of dining at Achray House this year. We look forward to your fourth visit to Achray House.

Like many of the other recent reviewers, we also stayed here recently as part of an itison deal which included a six course tasting menu. The hotel is in a great location over looking the loch and we really enjoyed our stay. Room was large and cosy and the couple who own the hotel were extremely friendly and do well to create a nice homely atmosphere in the hotel. All the food was excellent although I would have liked slightly larger portions for each course as the food was so nice! In saying that, I know our menu was part of a discounted offer and the portions for those eating from the standard evening menu looked substantial.

We loved the cosy lounge with the comfy sofas and log fire.. great for sitting before and after dinner and enjoying a nice drink from the bar. This was particularly welcoming when we first arrived having been walking all day. Speaking of which, the hotel is ideally located as the area contains numerous walks (munros etc) for all levels and the owners are happy to give great advice on this if guests are looking for suggested walks. We spent the next day in Comrie which I would highly recommend. I look forward to staying in this hotel again.

Thanks for your positive review, and I'm glad you enjoyed the food after your active day walking the local hills.

You mention the portion size in the taster menu. A taster menu is designed to be small portions of a larger number of courses, allowing you to enjoy the range of foods served without becoming too weighed down. Obviously portion size is a bit of an individual preference, but we don't reduce the size of the portions because you had bought a discounted deal.

I'm glad you enjoyed your one night stay, and hopefully we will see you again next year.

This is a small family run hotel which has recently undergone extensive upgrading. The decor is clean and fresh and the rooms are a generous size and very comfortable. The owners are pleasant and friendly. The hotel is situated at the bottom end of Loch Earn which is well stocked with seafood which are caught and served in the hotel restaurant. It dosen't come much fresher than this folks. We went for the taster menu which was enough on its own to tempt us back. Each course was well thought out and showed off the culinary skills of the chef/owner.
The setting is beautiful. A ray of sunshine. Scotland at its best.

Thanks for your kind review, and I'm glad we brought a ray of sunshine to an otherwise rather dreich day. I wish we could get seafood from Loch Earn, but as an inland loch all it supports are fresh water brown trout. Our seafood comes from the west coast, and our white fish from the east, but as Scotland is such a small country we still think of this as local.

I'm particularly pleased with your comments on our food as, judging by your other reviews, we are in rather illustrious company.

I stayed here with my partner on the itison voucher deal, and it was a perfect night away! The rooms were spacious and very clean. Our room had a loch view but also overlooked the mountains, was lovely to have a coffee and just daze outside.

We had the tasting menu which is excellent and the wines to match are reasonably priced. The breakfast was lovely and a nice variety.

The only small issue I had was the power of the shower, there wasn't much power to the flow of water but this wouldn't stop me from staying here again.

Thanks for your generous review and positive comments.

On the shower, we are in the process of working through the rooms replacing the showers, but in the current economic climate it will take us some time to replace them all.

We had booked for one night with the six course tasting menu. The food was fantastic but unfortunately my husband doesn't eat fish and was given a vegetarian option. His first two courses were a disappointment - cold pickled brocolli and cauliflower and vegetable broth that tasted of vinegar. Everything else about the weekend was spot on - location, room and lovely roaring log fire.

Thanks for your positive review, and I'm glad you enjoyed your stay.

I would like to comment in a little detail on your comments on the vegetarian options.

Firstly, the pickled broccoli was accompanied by a pink ginger jelly, and a wasabi air, and was not served on its own. Secondly, there was of course no vinegar in the vegetarian broth: it was lime juice and zest , designed to complement the chilli, ginger, coriander and lemongrass also present in the broth. Taster menus are complex to produce, and if done properly should give a variety of colours, flavours and textures in a natural progression, so substituting courses is not straightforward.

The deal you purchased was advertised as “Featuring a six course taster menu highlighting the best of Scottish fish, shellfish and game”, so I am a little surprised that you did purchase it if one of you does not eat fish or shellfish. On the confirmation email we sent you we again highlighted the fish, shellfish and game on the menu, and asked if you had any dietary requirements that you notify us to allow us to plan accordingly. You did not reply to this, and only advised us when you arrived in the early evening, two hours before you were booked to eat the meal. This really does not give us a fighting chance of producing alternative courses to the same standard as the main menu.

However, I'm glad that the issues you raised did not detract too much from your enjoyment, and hope that we will see you again the the future.

Regards
Alan Gibson

My husband and I stayed on the 28th October through Itison to celebrate his birthday. We did arrive very early but absolutely no problem and were made to feel very welcome from the start and shown to our room which was room nine and was very comfortable and had a beautiful view over the Loch, one little complaint was as mentioned by others, the shower, it was pretty poor but no big deal.Had a super meal ,really enjoyed the taster menu (although my husband did say rather cheekily that he could have done with more!) I tasted venison for the first time which was delicious and our food was served promptly and efficiently and after we had finished sat in the lounge in luxury by the roaring log fire, where we had a very amusing time with other residents.Breakfast in the morning was absolutely delicious ,cooked to perfection and served beautifully again with a breathtaking view ,of course it did help that it was a gloriously sunny crisp morning.I would just like to say thank you very much for a lovely stay and look forward very much to a return visit
