We were looking for a base to explore a new part of Scotland and perhaps find a hidden gem, unfortunately this hotel did not live up to the web page description (booked through Late Rooms) and reviews of other clients. It is more a passing through place than a village to discover, there are no other pubs or hotels in the village which is really just one main street adjacent to the motorway.
The entry from the back of the hotel from the car park is through the fire exit which is not very desirable. The staff on arrival were very friendly and throughout our stay this did not change, however, no one showed us to our room or asked if everything was ok and to our satisfaction. We had a twin room as all doubles were booked out, the twin beds are very small as is the shower cubical in the toilet which is also basic but clean with rather noisy fans in all rooms, we could here the one in the room above from 7.00am the next morning until the guest left.
The dinning room/bistro looked lovely although they had a limited range of background music which jumped regularly. The bar area was situated in the restraunt with a few bar stools which after eating was not the atmospheric place we had hoped we could relax in, as this is the main hub for the staff it made ordereing drinks etc on a busy Saturday night a challenge with the poor bar man running up and down stairs to service the main bar and disco which was being held in the basement. There was a serperate lounge room but it was occupied on the Friday with a large party and although we were guests felt we were intruding on them.
Dinner was disappointing for an award winning retsturant, we have traveled widely and ate in posh and basic venues and feel the food sourced was not the best quality. Chicken was tough, succulent pig was tough, veg overcooked, mash potatoes missing the butter? Breakfast was similar, pork sausages that were lacking in taste, overpowering salty bacon with tinned mushrooms and tasteless tomatoes, tea served from a flask of some Rubik cube description which was luke warm and lacking the essential ingredient.....tea? On a whole this is a 2 star establishment that would be fine for a business person passing through, not someone looking to spend leisure time on a weekend break, nowhere else to go apart from the hotel.
If your having a leisure break, find somewhere else!
