“Great hotel and spa but service lacking”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2014

My friends and I checked into this hotel after completing the Edinburgh moonwalk and were looking for a fun, relaxing stay which is exactly what we experienced! The victorian spa is beautifully decorated and the definition of tranquility and the beauty area was absolutely fabulous. The treatment I received was a massage called relax, restore, revive. The girl who did my treatment was absolutely lovely and the constant professional. The room was big and spacious with a lovely modern bathroom, the bed was very comfy and I had a brilliant nights sleep. The staff for the most part were very friendly - especially the reception and the leisure staff. However I found the restaurant staff to be very rude. I ate in the brasserie at night at half 9 as they didn't close til 10. It was not my intention to dine this late but certain circumstances prevented me from coming earlier. However the staff did not hide their dismay at all at having to take in a table half an hour before closing time - constantly checking their watches and handing over menus in dismay. The food itself I cannot fault as it was delicious. The breakfast buffet in the morning is really well laid out and has everything you could ask for. It had a big vegetarian selection ready which I was happy to see as in most hotels you have to ask for vegetarian options to be specially prepared. However the servers here seemed to forget about us as it took a round half an hour for our coffee and toast to come even though we had reminded them twice and other tables around us had came in after us and received theirs first. Overall a lovely hotel great for relaxing but slightly let down by staff attitude.

Firstly, congratulations on completing the Edinburgh Moonwalk, blisbeth. We're delighted that the relaxation part of your visit was successful in easing your aching limbs. It's just a shame that some team members let the side down and we'll address this straightaway. Sorry. Hope this won't deter you from returning sometime.

Family Room (1 double and 1 single bed) room number 145

It was small and warm, no air conditioning. The heating rail in the bathroom seemed extremely hot. (not safe for a 2yr old) it took 24 hours and 3 different members of staff to work out how to turn it off. we asked for a fan at reception and one was delivered to our room in within 15 minutes. bathroom was quite small (almost enough room to swing a cat!)

Children's facilities - staff at Big Country were very friendly and welcoming. There is a small soft play room next to the Big Country nursery. where you supervise your own children. It is open from around 9.30am - 6pm. it allows up to 15 children. I found it very claustrophobic with around 7 children + parents. You get up to 2, 3 hour child care sessions (included in the stay) every day. The facilities were great, it is just unfortunate that our 2yr 2month old girl didn't settle. It was a very safe and secure area.

Dining - There were a few different options for dinner. Both nights we ate in the Brasserie restaurant. The first night we asked to move table as there were a lot of ants crawling around the window we were seated next to. They moved us immediately and apologised. The Food was very tasty and very good portions sizes. In fact I would say the blonde beer battered haddock was too big! Our daughter ate from the mini munchers menu. We booked the dinner, bed and breakfast package. Each adult had £21.50 towards dinner and each child up to the age of 16 had £4.60 (the cheapest children's main course was £4.95) There was also the Meikle Restaurant, a bit more formal. It didn't open until 6.30pm, this didn't suit us, but looked lovely.
Breakfast was served in the Meikle Restaurant, from 7.30am - 10.00am. It was a self serve cooked/continental breakfast. All very tasty!

Pool - we used the pool mid morning, it was nice and quiet. The kids splash time was around 4.30pm. it looked fun but too busy. The Leisure complex provided towels and had plenty areas around the pool for non swimmers/spectators.

Outdoors - We walked up the footpath to the club house (but never made it to any of the facilities after being called back to collect our daughter from the big country). The tree top assault course looked good fun! The path would have been quite difficult to push a buggy up. It had been very wet, so the ground was very squidgy. There was a good play park at the front of the main reception up beside the tennis courts. We enjoyed the 18 hole putting green out side the 'HUB'
The grounds were very well maintained, our daughter enjoyed looking at the ducks and horses.

I would recommend the hotel to people with young families, but I would also advise couples or groups of adults hoping for a quiet break, that there are a lot of kids about. The staff were all friendly, there were some language barriers at times, but nothing that wasn't sorted. There was free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. (not in our room - no 145) The TV signal was also not very good. We had a very poor view out our room - it was the roof of the reception area!

Over all I would rate our stay 3.5/4 out of 5

I hope this review is of use. I don't normally review hotels etc... but that was our first proper break with our 2 year old and I thought it is good for people in a similar situation to know how we felt about it.

Room Tip: not room 145 - rooms on 2nd and 3rd floors would have better views

Informative, honest reviews like yours are like 'pennies from Heaven' to us, Louise C. It allows us to bask in praise for the parts that went well, before turning our attention to the areas where we weren't so clever. Thanks for being so candid and hope we'll see you again, when we'll allocate a 'room with a view'.

We stayed in lodge 821. Beautiful lodge, open plan living, kitchen, diner with 2 good sized rooms, both en-suite. The views from the balcony were beautiful, overlooking hills & fields with horses much to our 2 year olds delight!! Before we arrived we had an email from the hotel asking how we wanted our rooms set up - 4 singles or 1 double 2 singles in one room and a double or 2 singles in another!! We asked for stair gates & bed guards which were all provided and the lodge was well equipped (except for chopping boards) and very clean.

The hotel itself is about 1 mile away from the lodge over numerous speed bumps but there is a shuttle bus if you didn't want to walk.

The hotel is clean & has 5 (6 if you count the Italian) places to eat ranging from soup and sandwich (and the best whippy ice-cream I have ever tasted) to a l'carte. We ate at the Winter Garden & the Brassiere while we were there and can't fault the food or service. The only negative on the food front was the Clubhouse!! In our opinion it shouldn't be offered as an option or even advertised as a place to eat by the hotel - don't get me wrong it was OK but after spending 3 days at the hotel eating & enjoying the 'we can't do enough to help you' service the Clubhouse was a major let down! The Clubhouse itself is not up to the standard of the rest of the hotel, it looks more like a social club than anything else & the food was ok at best, deep fried frozen food! It's a shame as the rest of the stay had been perfect until that point.

Notwithstanding the Clubhouse experience our stay has been great! The hotel put on a number of organised activities & there are playparks & games on the lawn in front of the brassiere which kept our 2 year old entertained while we waited for food. The hotel is full of families so no one bats an eyelid if your kid is throwing a fit over one thing or another and the staff are very friendly & helpful. The pool is warm & they have a family changing area so mum AND dad can help wrestle small children out of wet swimming suits!

Although it's 20 degrees outdoors, it's your glowing review that's made us all feel warm and fuzzy, JAFraser - thanks! Your comments on the Clubhouse facilities are not misplaced and a refurb is on our radar. With so much yet to discover we hope it won't be too long until we welcome you back to the Hydro.

Went for weekend with kids and was very impressed with the hotel and surroundings. The Brasserie was great for kids and the menu was very good. Had booked kids into the kids club for 3 seperate sessions but they did not enjoy it so did not return after the first session. This was mainly because most of the other kids were younger and the activities on offer did not appeal to them. Was a bit disappointed with Crieff town centre (lots of closed down shops) but the hotel and grounds were lovely and we will definately retuen.

Room Tip: The room had bunk beds for the kids but was set in an alcove which was a bit claustrophobic. was als...

We're thrilled with your positive review, kmac3631 and its great to hear that you're already planning a return stay. We'd love to 'WOW' your kids on their next visit to BIG Country, so if they can tell us beforehand what 'floats their boat' we'll do our best to arrange these activities. Hope to see you all soon.

My partner and I enjoyed our stay very much at Crieff hydro. We particularly enjoyed our dinner at the Meikle restaurant. The service was excellent as was the food. We really enjoyed the whiskey tasting experience and we appreciated the birthday plate very much. Breakfast the following morning was wonderful. The spa wasn't as impressive as I'd hoped. It needs a little replenishment. All in all though it was a great stay.

It's wonderful to hear that the Hydro ticked so many boxes for your perfect couples' 'getaway' break, Caitlin O. The Meikle Restaurant team were particularly chuffed to be singled out for praise - thanks! Hope we'll see you again soon, when we'll be aiming for a top-score review.

For the third year our family spent four days in the cottages They are very well equiped and spotless. The children tried out various activies and enjoyed them all. All staff were very friendly helpful and patient. The children really enjoyed the archery and quad bikes and the tree walking was enjoyed by all who took part. We certainly plan to go back next year. Ideal for a large family gathering There were 12 of us in two cottages Very relaxing. Did not have to try and find things to amuse the children

Room Tip: We were self catering. Try and get cottages Concliff I think as they have an open outlook and quite...

We had use of the facilities by way of our stay at the Murraypark Hotel and our opinion of the Crieff Hydro is simply amazing. The staff are a credit to the Hydro as is the food served in the Winter Garden and the mojitos from the Brasserie. We absolutely adore the Victorian Spa which in our opinion is £10 each well spent, we had a thoroughly enjoyable day spent relaxing within beautiful surroundings. Cant wait until our next visit.

Thanks for taking the time to post such a glowing review, elaine g. It's wonderful to hear that you enjoyed the best of both worlds: the cosiness of the Murraypark, combined with all the fun of the Hydro! Even better, knowing that you're already planning a return visit is terrific news. Hope to see you soon.
