“Great short break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014

Just returned from a short break in this hotel with my family six adults and two children and it was great. The hotel and surrounding area was lovely, the rooms were very nice and comfortable with lovely soft fluffy towels. The staff were very friendly and helpful and you had a choice of restaurants for lunch or dinner breakfast was also very good with plenty of choice. The facilities were excellent for adults and children plenty to do. It was so good we are already planning a return visit.

We loved the casual style of your review, stuarty m and reckon that we did ok overall. We're always up for a challenge 'though, so here's hoping we'll have the chance to welcome you back before long, when we'll be aiming for a glowing review and top marks.

Having visited 11 times in 7 years you must feel like part of the Hydro family by now, Daniel D! It's always lovely to receive a great review, but when it comes from a regular guest it feels even more special. It's brilliant to have you as an advocate and we hope to welcome you back soon.

I think that this is a fantastic place to stay, whether it is just as a couple or with family. There are amazing facilities for the kids. Lots for them to do. But equally, you can take a quiet walk in the beautiful grounds. We ate in the Meikle restaurant and the food was lovely. Would recommend :)

I was attending a church event at the Hydro, but also enjoyed the comfort and facilities of the hotel, especially the Victorian Spa and the meals in the Meikle restaurant. Staff were friendly and helpful as always.

Room Tip: room 255 was rather cramped, up an additional stair with no lift; not the best we have had

On this visit we used the self catering option, a delightful cottage overlooking the golf course, ideally situated for our Newfoundland Dog to enjoy the forest walks. The facilities within the cottage were excellent, a cosy retreat for families and couples alike. There are a good range of dining options available and would recommend them all. It is lovely to dress for dinner in the Meikle restaurant for a special occasion, and the new Pizzeria has a more informal and relaxed ambiance. The staff were welcoming, attentive, informative and knowledgeable of the services provided and surrounding areas. This is now our 30th year of coming to the Hydro, our children are booking to come themselves too which is testament to an environment which is person centred and forward thinking. We have seen many changes and additions to the Facilities on offer and highly recommend you try Crieff Hydro. Looking forward to our next visit.

This hotel is set in a lovely place surrounded by beautiful hills. It is an old spa building keeping its Victorian charm, but with many modern additions. My room was very nicely decorated, spotless clean and the dinner was very good. That is all I can say positively about it, as most things were not up to 4-star standard. It was a disaster in terms of sleep quality and service during lunch and breakfast. My bedroom had an old sash window, which could be opened only after about a 10-minute struggle but then I couldn’t close it. When I asked at reception if they could fix it, they just sent somebody to close it. When I got too warm during the night and opened it for few minutes, I couldn’t close it again. Not that good in Scotland in January. I know an old hotel will have its quirks, but being able to open and close bedroom windows is basic expectation, especially as there was no air-con. What was worst was that my room was connected to another bedroom by a locked door and there was a 2cm gap at the bottom of the connecting door. As a result, I could hear EVERYTHING that was happening next-door. Including the TV that the guest decided switch on maximum between 1.30am and 2.30am! Not the hotel’s fault but it is not difficult to put a proper door to separate rooms. The breakfast was a real struggle as there were 2 waitresses serving over 100 people, and you couldn’t just get up to get your own tea, coffee and toast. As a result, we spent the breakfast constantly ‘hunting’ for the waitress’s attention. It took us about 15 minutes to get a tiny cup of tea (no teapot!) and another 10 minutes to achieve getting some toast. The scrambled eggs were awful, the only reminder that it came from eggs were the many shells. Buffet lunch was the same struggle with getting water – there were no jugs of water but two stressed waitresses were running around pouring small glasses of water. They were not obviously prepared to cater for such amount of people, which is really strange for such a big hotel. A hotel with over 200 bedrooms cannot rely on 2 waitresses serving morning and lunch drinks. If they are understaffed, they could surely afford to invest into buying some water jugs, teapots and self-service toasters.
