“Family holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

Staying at one of our favourite family hotels. Took a chalet as usual. Highlight was the high ropes for my disabled son. The instructor with him was fabulous. My son did the high ropes twice with the same instructor. This instructor really supported him to achieve what my son wanted.

Room Tip: Chalets are great value for money

We felt so proud to read how well our high ropes Instructor interacted with your son, to give him such a positive outdoor activity experience, Bridget M. It's also great to hear that the Hydro is one of your favourite hotels. Can't wait to welcome you back for more family fun.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

Second time I've stayed at this hotel and in truth, the 'jury was out' following my first visit.

Stayed in September with my partner who was attending a medical conference.

The visit didn't start well because we were allocated a room between the lifts (137?) - that is literally, one lift either side of the room and hence it was also a pretty narrow room. We decided to take the room since it was only for two nights. As it turned out, it was only one night since my partner who was attending the conference early on Saturday morning, woke early, entered the bathroom and found various fast moving 'beasties' on the floor heading for cover when the light was switched on. She managed to catch a couple of them and retained them in a glass and reported them at reception before leaving. She rang me to tell me the exterminator man would be calling so that was my Saturday lie in 'out of the window'. The guy turned up, couldn't identify the insects so said he would take them away for analysis, in the meantime would I mind if he fumigated the bathroom - no problem on my side. In fairness to the hotel, the accommodation manager did offer us another room which I gratefully accepted and we did get a room down the corridor with excellent views and you could have almost held a dance in it since it was that big!

Unfortunately, our visit was also marred by poor service in the brasserie on the previous evening. We had booked for 8.30, arrived at 8.20 to be told our table wasn't quite ready and should take a seat in the bar. I purchased a bottle of wine which I signed for but was then told this couldn't be done because the room was in my partners name (even though I was registered. Never had that in a hotel before, my partner usually manages to rack up a nice bill in my name!). At 8.50. with no sign of anyone offering to take us to our table, I went and found the person who had booked us in to be told they had forgotten us and our table had been ready for some time.

We ordered fish and chips, they had run out (but they were serving these whilst we were waiting and right up to when we eventually sat down). We ordered oil and bread for a starter and settled on the curry for the main. When the oil arrived it was just garlic (not olive and balsamic as per the menu). It was also superheated (both oil and bread) and the garlic just sat in the ramekin refusing to mix with the superheated oil. we called the waiter who was very courteous but due to a language difficulties we had difficulty explaining the problem. We eventually managed to explain and he went away and brought back balsamic 'oil'. This similarly refused to mix with the oil and turned out to be balsamic glaze (syrup). It was at this stage that I requested the manager.

Fair play, the manager who was Australian was with us very quickly and readily agreed with the points we raised (couldn't understand why they had run out of fish and chips on a Friday, agreed the oil was unacceptable, was very sorry for the delay in seating us due to staff training/language issues). He waived the cost of our wine, served our curry personally himself and also instructed our waiter to provide sweets and coffee without charge- cannot fault his handling of the matter and thank him for that.

Breakfast needs comment - this is not a pleasant affair. The dining room is definitely tired, the old patterned carpet does a good job of hiding the spilled food and the food is only acceptable. On both occasions we have stayed we have had to wait in a holding area to be seated for breakfast (15 minutes).

I understand that things can go wrong and it is how things are dealt with that is important and in both instances the hotel handled them well - in the case of the insects, it's an old building and this was unfortunate. The service angle though is different and it is here that I have to be particularly blunt, this hotel employs a good majority of overseas workers and the language barrier is a problem and I'm sure also impacts upon the customer service. This is not a cheap hotel to stay at and if it is to stay with it's current employment policy then recruitment and training need to be the subject of scrutiny and assessment as to whether this not only gives value for money to guests but also provides the level of the service they expect and deserve.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms between the lifts.

It was so kind of you to post such a pragmatic review, R55DRG, considering how many times we tripped ourselves up during you stay. By the sounds of it, we still need to go some way to restore your faith in the Hydro. We'd really appreciate the chance to do so if you'd care to get in touch.

This hotel and it's staff made our 46th anniversary wedding break very special. From being able to pre-order a cake and wine for our room in advance, to the very friendly staff in both the Meikle restaurant and the Brasserie. They certainly cater well for families, and all ages with loads of activities to do. We did not let the weather put us off, and it was lovely to walk round the beautiful gardens and hotel. The executive studio was exactly as shown on the website, and it was a lovely place to relax and unwind. Regrettably the spa was fully booked, so it is advisable to pre book if you wish to take advantage of it.

It's great to hear that everything came together so beautifully to make your Wedding Anniversary stay such a success, decnette. Just a shame that the weather didn't play ball - but we hope to welcome you back at a sunnier time. In the meantime, thanks for posting such a lovely review.

This hotel and resort just keeps getting better. I have visited this hotel for over 30 years now, as a boy, teenager and now with my own family. I have never had a bad experience. I will probably be visiting for the next 30! The accommodation is superb and the quality of food is unquestionable. The facilities are first class and professionally managed. The resort caters for all age groups. I would recommend the self catering lodges if you are coming with a large family - privacy and flexibility combined. Once you book your holiday, to avoid disappointment, take the time to pre-book kids club (Big Country), manicures, activities, pony rides and dinner reservations as demand can be high at peak times. If you do not fancy the activities, there has been some years I have just relaxed and enjoyed the food and entertainment and still had a great holiday.
Keep up the fantastic work and congratulations to all your staff as it is them that make the extra difference to this place.

We took our family on a three night break and to enable us all to be under the one roof booked two interconnecting lodges each with two bedrooms.
Worked brilliantly! Daughter, husband and baby in one bedroom, older boys in another. Son, wife and youngsters in one bedroom in second lodge with myself and wife in the other.
ALL BEDROOMS HAD EN SUITES!
Loads of room for everyone and easy to sit 9 round a table and also have two high chairs.
Great facilities and very child friendly - stair gates etc. Large vestibule (which was great for wet shoes) with utility and toilet access from it.
Everyone very impressed!

We stayed at Crieff Hydro on Sun 6th and Mon 7th October for a well deserved break but unfortunately our stay was not very good. We're allocated the 141 room which must be the nosiest room in the hotel! It's at the back of the lift and people were getting on it at all hours of the day and night, it was awful as we could hear everything from corridors and rooms next to us.
Furthermore, our bathroom was dirty with fungus on the walls in the shower; towels and bedding were not changed; the information about afternoon tea left in the room was wrong which meant we had to wait 45 minutes for it after we had spent all morning in the victorian spa. We're starving!
And lastly, in our last morning, we went to reception to enquire about bus times and a very unpleasant receptionist – Becky - attended us as if she was doing us a great favour. Only later after breakfast I noticed that she had given us the wrong bus times!!! On checking out the receptionist didn't even ask why our stay was etc. Very poor customer service.
Considering my awful experience, I cannot recommend your hotel. Especially after having written to management straight after we got back and not having received any acknowledgement whatsoever. This is why I'm writing this review.
I would like to say though, that the food and service at the Brasserie were excellent and the staff there were the most pleasant and attencious in the whole hotel.

Room Tip: Do not stay in room 141!

Oh my goodness, we were all shocked by your poor review, Mooncat7. We're also puzzled for a number of reasons: there's no record of you bringing any of these matters to our attention at the time; Becky really is the lovliest girl and we haven't received your letter. Please contact us, so we can address all these matters and find some way to restore your faith in the Hydro.
