“Birthday dinner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

6 of us ate here last week. The Grill Room was very quiet with little atmosphere, (I'm not sure about the "pink" lighting around the columns - very strange for a hotel that claims to be the oldest in Scotland!)

The food was very good, although we sent the steak platter back as we asked for "rare" and it arrived over cooked. However, the staff responded very well and within minutes we had our "rare" steak.

All in all, a lovely meal for a special occasion

“Not what it claims to be...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

Stopped off here after a good walk one Sunday. Really liked the bar area and roaring fire, plus all the Burns memorabilia. Staff friendly and eager to please - but the food! I ordered a sandwich as a snack and it was described as a free range egg mayo with special Japanese cress on malted brown bread, with some sort of smoke flavoured (perhaps hickory) chips to accompany it.

What arrived, eventually, was a chunky, white bread sandwich with a rather mean filling of egg mayo, and no cress. The chips were fine but not as described either. I very politely explained that this was not what I ordered and it was taken away and replaced with 2 slices of malted bread from a pre-sliced loaf, the same filling and some very limp, clearly not fresh cress.

I was so hungry by this time that I ate it but - £6 for that offering was way overpriced. Give me a Pret a Manger sandwich any day over this.

I did email them to constructively explain my experience but did not have the courtesy of a response so in the future I may pop in for a drink but would never recommend it as somewhere to eat - despite the extravagant claims on their website and menu.

“Lovely cozy pub-good fresh food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

Spent a week at The Mains of Taymouth and visited the Kenmore bar every day after a long winter walk. Lovely log fire. Great wine choice with proper wine glasses. Good beer. Excellent food - fesh, well cooked and well presented. It is expensive but at the end of the day you get what you pay for. Wish we could have eaten there every day!! Very friendly staff who engaged in conversation.
Dogs welcome and our little Bruce the black cocker spaniel puppy really enjoyed it. Wouls love to stay in the luxury cottages the next time we are in the area - but not sure if they allow well behaved dogs. If not will definately eat again in the Kenmore bar.

“Pretentious presentation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

Cosy hotel which allows dogs in - this was the plus side. As for the food - it claims on the menu that it uses a new cooking method using a special grill. The burgers that we purchased were presented skewered on an unusual and unecessary huge plate with a cylindrical dish of several blackened wedges/ chips - not aesthetically pleasing to look at and not much better to eat. Also overpriced in my opinion.
