“A REAL GEM!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2012

Stayed for 7 nights - excellent stay. Joy and Robbie just brilliant hosts. Wonderful breakfast, room spotlessly clean, beautiful en suite bathroom and lots of little extras - a real gem. A great location to explore Orkney and Joy was always on hand to give advice about where to go! One morning we caught the early ferry to Westray ( great place for seeing puffins) Joy was up and handed us a packed breakfast. Wonderful views of Hoy from our room.

The Burnside Farm in Stromness was one of our favorite B&Bs of our Scotland holiday. The location is perfect for sight seeing or just visiting the small and unique village of Stromness. When we arrived we were greeted by Joy who was so wonderful and friendly. She showed us our room which was large, clean and had a beautiful view of the bay. The bathroom had heated tile floors, a towel warmer that worked really well and fresh flowers. The wifi always worked really well so we could face time our kids. The bed was so comfortable and I absolutely loved the wool throws over the bedspread and the homemade shortbread. Yum! The breakfast was absolutely delicious and Joy wasn’t going to let you go hungry. One of my favorite things after breakfast was watching the cows being herded back to their pasture after the morning milking by their cute dog Ben. Oh, if only we could’ve taken Joy and her B&B along with us on the rest of our holiday! Thank you Joy for the best two days on Orkney!

We stayed here for 4 nights, and were sorry to leave. We arrived at about 11.30pm on the late ferry from Shetland, and Joy and Robbie gave us a very warm welcome with tea and home-made flapjack. Couldn't ask for more! Good situation for exploring the archaeology of W. Orkney, and Joy provided us with daily "What's On" bulletins from the tourist office, as well as lots of advice about local events and places to go.
Breakfasts in the conservatory were excellent - wide selection of fruit, cereals, cooked breakfasts (including smoked fish if ordered beforehand) and home-baked bread and bannocks. Joy was a very attentive host, friendly without being intrusive, and nothing was too much trouble. We stayed in North View, as it was the last room available and perfectly adequate, but probably worth paying the extra for the more spacious rooms with sea views. Whichever room's available, book it!

I had an excellent couple of nights here, staying on business in Stromness. Joy is indeed as industrious and caring a host as the other reviews say, with the breakfast really quite spectacular. As a single traveller I was in the room at the back of the house with a private bathroom. This was spotlessly clean and very well resourced: maybe the room was a little on the small side, and obviously without the views of Scapa Flow, but then that is reflected in the price. Didn't stop me being envious of those lucky enough to score the front facing rooms! Anyway, you won't go wrong staying here, but pay the extra for the front rooms, which are much more spacious and have stunning views as described, and photographed, elsewhere.

Joy is a very generous and welcoming host. We appreciated all the little extras... shortbread bickies, chocolates and Joy even did our washing for us! We felt very at home. The breakfasts were absolutely huge and the berries, yoghurt and farm cheese the best we have tasted. Our boys had the delightful experience of watching a calf be born. We stayed 3 nights and on the final morning ran out of hot water for the shower - the rest of the time there was no problem and I would love to stay here again, but would make sure I was up early enough for first shower! Excellent neolithic sites an easy drive away. Spectacular scenery from our bedroom window and spacious room.

Room Tip: We booked North and Scapa View. Scapa View was fantastic - waking up and going to bed to the most a...

We could only get one night here and I understand why. This is how a B&B should be. Warm in atmosphere, temperature and friendliness of the host (Joy). Being on a dairy farm is exciting to us townies and to then eat the cheese made from the milk at our feast of a breakfast was just brilliant! Not to mention the rhubarb and ginger marmalade which was so good I had to have two bran scones! I want to go back now! PS the shower in the room is fantastic!
