We stayed at a lot of B&Bs over our five week trip to Scotland and while there was some stiff competition, without a doubt this was the best of the best.
The owner Joy provided a supremely comfortable king sized bed with a range of pillows, crisp sheets and fluffy towels. The bathroom was large, with heated towel rails, and the shower we had been dreaming of since we left home five weeks ago. None of those infuriating little electric things with dials and a dribble of water - this water blasted out hot and strong! Our room had a great view over Stromness and the port. There was comfortable seating in our room as well as a guest lounge with TV and books if we wanted to use it. And we were warm, with individually controlled heating in the room so it could be adjusted to personal needs.
Joy cooked a wonderful breakfast in the mornings, as well as providing bannocks, pancakes, fresh rhubarb and plums and cheese from the farm's own cows, which usually strolled past the conservatory window on the way back from milking while we were having breakfast.
Joy is a charming hostess, warm and sincere and ready with good advice. Stromness is an excellent base for touring Orkney, within really easy driving distance of anywhere on the Mainland island, and we thought prettier and more atmospheric than Kirkness as a location. We stayed five days and really were not ready to move on!
