We stayed here for three nights in early August 2005.
The old mill has been succesfully converted into an interesting and comfortable B&B.
We were a bit non-plussed to arrive in the late afternoon and find the place apparently deserted, so we left a suitcase, went away and returned around 90 minutes later. Apparently the door bell wasn’t working, we were told by the proprietor. So why not fix it rather than inconvenience guests and waste their time?
Similarly he knew the extractor fan in our bathroom was not functioning correctly but was not going to repair until the end of the season.
He was also aware that guests, other than us, had had a problem, which I mentioned as we left, with the dual flush loo.
Why didn’t he tell guests as they arrived or provide a notice in the bathroom rather than wait for the handle to be broken or guests to have to tolerate an ineffective flush?
Two nights were spent in a rather small though nicely decorated room with a private bathroom down the corridor and the final night in a very comfortable suite with four poster, chaise longe etc. (but see note above about bathroom deficiencies).
Breakfast was provided with all ten or so guests at one communal table. This worked really well and gave the opportunity to talk to interesting people and share experiences about what was worth seeing in the area.
There was an excellent choice of cereals, jams and fruits though only only bacon, eggs, tomatoes etc was available as a cooked breakfast (no kippers or other fish). Poached eggs were sometimes overcooked.
The accomodation undubtedly offers excellent value.
The proprietor’s recommendation of a place to eat good food, which we followed one night, did not coincide with mine.
For food in Orkney we can recommend the excellent Foveran on the Kirwall Orphir road, and also the Hamnavoe restaurant at Stromness and the Indian Garden in Kirkwall.
We also ate at the highly rated (Rick Stein, Will Self) Creel resataurant at St. Margaret's Hope which, in my view, did not reach the standard of the Foveran food (accompaniments overpowered the delicate flavours of the fish) and the service did not come close.
We wished we'd eaten at the Foveran on the other nights when we got pretty poor fare elsewhere in Orkney.
