We only stayed at The Mill for a couple of nights but were warmly welcomed & given plenty of good advice on making the most of our time on Orkney. The room was quite small, but very comfortable. Given that it was light until after 11PM the size of the room wasn't really a problem, although we'll probably splash out next time & book the four-poster room. Breakfast was very nice - a good selection of food & drink, and some great people to talk with around the table. The location was very good - a little out of the way from the main centres, but only a few minutes down the road from Maes Howe (book days ahead for tours), the Ring Of Brodgar, the Stones of Stenness & heaps of other incredible sites.

This place is a little difficult to find, as the sign rather blends into the wall it is on, and it is out of town or village. However, it is worth it. The grounds are lovely, and the bedrooms very nicely decorated and comfy. We had 6 travelers in 4 rooms for three nights, and the upstairs suite had a great sitting room. The bed was a little claustrophobic as it was in an alcove with walls on three sides. Also, we were there in June when the sun doesn't set until 12:30, and rises around 3am - there is a skylight over the bed that was imperfectly covered by foil. But the place was warm with a heater and had plenty of space! Breakfast was at a grand table downstairs, and there is a huge lounge on the first floor. Morag was a kind hostess. Warning, there is only enough parking for 2 or 3 cars. Also, no place really close to eat - you need to go into Kirkwall or Stromness for food. However, it's a lovely drive. Kirkwall is only about 10 minutes away, and full of choices.

The Mill is about 3 minutes away from Maes Howe, Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar.

    • Liked — The fact that it was a mill and still had parts around added to the atmosphere - I liked that it was out of town and very quiet except for the sound of the brook out back.
    • Disliked — The bed in the Hopper Suite was claustrophobic and the light from the skylight bothered during the summer.

We stayed 4 days here, and it was really lovely. We had the bedroom with the four poster bed and the sound of the mill stream coming through the window. There was a large table for everyone to sit around and get to know each other. We were not use to that but it was lovely we met some interesting people and had lovely conversations, one morning poor old Morag was waiting for us to leave.

For evening meals, try the Indian in the main street in Kirkwell think its something like Dil S.., the chipshop in Stromness for your fish supper there are seats by the tourist office. Also Julia's bistro (closes at 5.30) the orkney fudge cheesecake (to die for).
The restaurant at Scara Brae was lovely but not open in the evening. Most evening meals are to be found in the hotels it seems.

If you are going to Hoy to see the Old Man, strong walking boots, takes about hour and half one way, but well worth it. We took the car across as it was only £32 so we could then do the walk, and see the Scapa Flow museum, if you go pedestrian (£12 return).
you will only be able to do one thing. We suggest you take the 10am ferry and come back about 4.30. Leaving it later may mean you wont do all the walk. The other thing is if its a busy holiday period you may have to book the ferry in advance. We were there in July and we booke the day before and had the last place on the 10 ferry and the last place on the 4.30 one.

Very good Accomodation, Had top floor to ourself with two children sleepiing in a separate bedroom and a separate living room area for ourselves. Very clean apart from en suite shower which was showing age and mould. Owner state that the rooms are to be revamped for next season. Breakfast is taken around a large tbale with other guests. It was interesting to listen to other persons tales. The breakfast was of a very good standard, full scottish with cereals and fruit available. For very good cheap food can't beat the Fish andChip van that parks up in Stromness in the evening which locals use . Orkney is very good for iron age sites

“Comfortable. On balance more postives than negatives”

Mill of Eyrland

We stayed here for three nights in early August 2005.

The old mill has been succesfully converted into an interesting and comfortable B&B.

We were a bit non-plussed to arrive in the late afternoon and find the place apparently deserted, so we left a suitcase, went away and returned around 90 minutes later. Apparently the door bell wasn’t working, we were told by the proprietor. So why not fix it rather than inconvenience guests and waste their time?
Similarly he knew the extractor fan in our bathroom was not functioning correctly but was not going to repair until the end of the season.
He was also aware that guests, other than us, had had a problem, which I mentioned as we left, with the dual flush loo.
Why didn’t he tell guests as they arrived or provide a notice in the bathroom rather than wait for the handle to be broken or guests to have to tolerate an ineffective flush?

Two nights were spent in a rather small though nicely decorated room with a private bathroom down the corridor and the final night in a very comfortable suite with four poster, chaise longe etc. (but see note above about bathroom deficiencies).

Breakfast was provided with all ten or so guests at one communal table. This worked really well and gave the opportunity to talk to interesting people and share experiences about what was worth seeing in the area.
There was an excellent choice of cereals, jams and fruits though only only bacon, eggs, tomatoes etc was available as a cooked breakfast (no kippers or other fish). Poached eggs were sometimes overcooked.

The accomodation undubtedly offers excellent value.

The proprietor’s recommendation of a place to eat good food, which we followed one night, did not coincide with mine.
For food in Orkney we can recommend the excellent Foveran on the Kirwall Orphir road, and also the Hamnavoe restaurant at Stromness and the Indian Garden in Kirkwall.
We also ate at the highly rated (Rick Stein, Will Self) Creel resataurant at St. Margaret's Hope which, in my view, did not reach the standard of the Foveran food (accompaniments overpowered the delicate flavours of the fish) and the service did not come close.
We wished we'd eaten at the Foveran on the other nights when we got pretty poor fare elsewhere in Orkney.
