We stayed here in December 2005, originally booked for 2 nights at the start of our 2 week holiday in the Orkney Islands but we loved it so much we stayed a third night, then came back for our last night on Orkney too! It's on the Orkney Mainland close to the Ring of Brodgar, Maes Howe so well sited for exploring the mainland if you have hired a car.
A good start was the very warm welcome from Jan the hostess, who has lived in this old manse for years (her husband is Orcadian) and knows a lot about the different Orkney islands. We were very impressed with our bedroom which was newly decorated tastefully with incredibly comfortable bed and olde-worlde style en-suite with a good shower over the roll-top bath. We had the place to ourselves which was obviously a bonus! Each night we came in after a blustery days walking, where a fire was waiting for us in the lounge, and we'd could curl up and watch tv or films (they have Sky movies!), or read - they've plenty of books on local interest. We brought our own wine to drink with meals, which we took at a large table in the dining room off the lounge. The food was excellent and there was SO much of it! Jan obviously enjoys cooking - each night we had a 3 course meal of mainly local ingredients and completely different food each night - we discussed in the morning what we might be eating that night. It was like going to stay with a friend who makes sure your every need is attended to - top service and very friendly! breakfast too was delicious and there was huge choice including home made scones, bread, jam etc as well as the cooked part! I would highly recommend this beautiful bed and breakfast to anyone travelling to Orkney and wanting somewhere cosy and special to stay - in the past we've always chosen small hotels rather than B+Bs but we loved it here. Definitely the best place we stayed in the whole 2 weeks.
