Woodwick House is tucked away in Evie, about15 minutes from Kirkwall and 20 minutes from Stromness. It is really centrally located for access to all. There is a bus stop at the end of the lane that will take you into Kirkwall. Cars and cyclists find it easily.
It is a small country house hotel that will lodge only 12 people a night, some shared baths and some ensuites. Entering the drive you pass through castle like columns and cross the racing burn (stream) that is dappled with fuschia blossoms that grow like bushes along its bankc and come upon the circular drive surrounding the sundial.
Then you enter the sunny foyer and are greeted by James. He tells you about the short walk down to the bay where seals may be sunning and introduces you to Jodee the chef who makes the most delictable organic or local fare meals. If you choose to have dinner there, (also available to non-residents if booked ahead) you have 3 choices for 3 courses served on handmade pottery!
Bed and breakfast includes the traditional British sausage et al. and kippers, porridge or organic yogurt. Meals can cater to special needs and vegetarians!
Woodwick House is not on the beaten track, but it is well worth finding it. It is a retreat away from all. You can nestle amongst the few trees that stand on the island and imagine yourself in a fairy glade!
Average price for 2 meals and lodging is about $160 or so. They have been know to allow dogs, but I never heard or saw them. Same with newborn humans.....saw but never heard them. You may also arrive when there is a wonderfully quirky concert planned. Music from all over the world finds its way to Woodwick house. Last year I heard a traditional Macedonian gypsy band from Tasmania, as well as a Klezmer - type band from Brooklyn!
Choose this place and you will not be sorry! It is truly enchanting.
