“All round lovely, will be going back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2012

I grew up on the island of Hoy and still live in Orkney, but fancied a break on Hoy for the weekend - and Wild Heather looked perfect.
We arrived and were welcomed into a huge airy room with its own separate conservatory for meals, and a massive king size bed. The ensuite bathroom was also very good.
It was a very well decorated place, with lovely colours and tasteful finishing touches.
I had booked evening meals as well and these were excellent, especially given my boyfriend's extensive list of dietary requirements!!
Our hosts were extremely friendly and helpful and we were very well looked after!
Weather was not great so we spend a lot of time relaxing. The B&B is situated right on the shore and it is a gorgeous location. The view from the conservatory is super.
We are going back in the summer!

Despite our arriving late and unannounced Helen and Derek were utterly charming, welcoming and helpful. Our two night stay felt more like staying with friends than a visit to a B&B.

The bedroom was spectacular - a real sense of the sea lapping against our window, and a stunning view down the bay from our bed, and from the table in our own breakfast room.

The best B&B we've ever visited.

I stayed a Wild Heather about a year ago as part of a business trip but did not write a review as my work life was just too hectic and it was for business and not pleasure. During my first stay I got to know more about Hoy and the fantastic wildlife/treks there are on offer on the island and I decided I would bring my partner with me on the next trip. The second trip was met with some anticipation as my first stay was comfortable, hospitable, the Wild Heather B&B was a lovely building and the views of the bay were to die for. Also I have to say the food was absolutely brilliant - hearty portions and great home cooking - i would thoroughly recommend paying the (marginal) extra for the food! On arrival me and my partner were met by Helen and shown our room and given a nice cup of tea and a lovely lemon drizzle cake - this went down a treat and set the tone for what was to be a thoroughly enjoyable week in the Orkneys. Derek and Helen were enterntaining and thoughtful hosts, the food was again superb and both the weather and the views were just breathtaking. The treks are really good fun around the Island and the wildlife and fishing are in abundance. I work and live in London and to get away to such a peaceful, tranquil location (with a very comfortable bed) was just what the doctor ordered. My partner and I have said we will definitely head out to Orkney again - a few trips just do not do it justice and we will 100% stay at Wild Heather B&B again.

What a lovely welcome on arrival to this absolute gem of a B&B! And this was how it was throughout our stay. The rooms were utterly delightful with thoughtful touches, clean and homely. Delicious local fare was offered, as we had requested, and included salmon from Westray and vegetables from their garden. You wouldn't guess that there is no supermarket or easy convenience store nearby. We could see, as the rooms all had lovely views, the surrounding water and hills. Had we had more time we could have relaxed outside in this quiet and beautiful area. Information of the sights and attractions was readily given by Derek and I will certainly recommend this comfortable and high standard B&B to others and would like to return again in the future.

Helen and Derek were charming and very welcoming indeed. They provided us with tea as soon as we walked through the door and during our stay armed us with a wealth of local information, including a rundown of all the local attractions and gave us an insight into the culture. The lounge at Wild Heather is packed full of books and maps including photo journals of Orkney life and histories of the fascinating war-time usage of the area.

Our time on Hoy included walking to the Old Man of Hoy, the Martello tower, the Dwarfie Stane (rock-cut tomb), the lonely grave and Scapa Flow.

The position of the accommodation is right by the waters edge, literally a few meters away overlooking the bay and Scapa Flow, with the lights from the ferries going past at night. All rooms are extremely comfortable with, easily controllable under floor heating, a large variety of towels neatly wrapped and presented, generous tea and coffee making facilities, excellent hot showers and large well sprung beds. Great views from the rooms.

Food was perfect with large portions of very well prepared local produce. Our meals were delicious and included local salmon (huge chucks), kippers and eggs and many vegetables from the garden. Breakfast includes a selection from a very large list. We didn't need to eat again that day!

We loved staying there and couldn't recommend Wild Heather highly enough.

We will be back!!!

Thanks to Derek and Helen for a wonderful stay on Hoy. Our room was beautifully decorated, clean and fresh. The en-suite bathroom had a wonderful relaxing and refreshing shower. The view of the bay is spectacular and the opperunity to watch the wild life facinating. Breakfast was delicious and served in our own private conservatory. My husband and I were welcomed with open arms and felt like one of the family.

Our stay at Wild Heather B&B was very comforatble and relaxing. Derek and Helen were extremely welcoming and made us feel like part of the family. Our room was clean and fresh and the en-suite bathroom provided privacy. The setting of the B&B on Hoy is very serene and allowed us to relax and enjoy the surrounding beauty of the Island. The cooked to order breakfast was delicious and plentiful and gave us a great start to our day.
