“A hidden gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2013

Had time to spare and had been recommended this little fortress to see and explore and we were not disappointed. The gentleman and young lady who welcomed us in from the sudden torrential downpour were both charming and informative. The castle received lottery money to refurbish and it was definitely money well spent. Brilliantly done, very tasteful but clear and precise information and excellent for children. So pleased that we visited. Many thanks to the guy who showed us around.

“Portencross Castle - Over 2000 years of Scotland's history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

I first came across Portencross Castle about 12 years ago, I remember walking around it and thinking 'what a shame' - it was in a bad state of neglect. Today I visited the area for the first time since then and was very pleasantly surprised to see that the castle has gone through an awful lot of hard work and time to get restored into it's present state. A lot of hard work sweat and a few tears by enthusiasts has turned this ruin into a must see castle - with so much of Scotland's history passing through it over the many years. There are many aids inside the castle to help you learn the history and a very friendly team of dedicated advisors to talk you through the history of the current castle - and how it has evolved from the old castle. The castle is now available for functions (for a fee) and is continually being restored further as finances become available. The stunning views from the top floor are tremendous... - not to be missed. Don't do what I did and forget to take your camera - oops!. On a day like today (bright and clear) Arran, Wee Cumbrae, Great Cumbrae, Bute and parts of the Kintyre peninsula as well as Ailsa Craig can be see. The old harbour is also well maintained and there are a few coastal walks nearby just to set your mind and imagination back a few hundred years - great for kids and adults alike. I will go back - to take some photos with my camera and get into the history in more detail.

“Small castle, historical significance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

Recently refurbished, Portencross Castle is situated right on the Clyde, near West Kilbride. Stunning location, manned by volunteers, and it's a fun little castle to walk through. Not disabled friendly, although the display on the ground floor would be accessible.

We loved going up to the roof to look over the water and take some great photos. The great room is lovely, and beautifully furnished.

Go have a visit. It won't take you long to look around, and is a great stop off. I think entry was by donation. Mind yer heid as you go up the stairs!
