Owner description: West Kilbride, Scotland’s only designated craft town, samples the wealth of Scottish craft and design talent. This highly rated visitor attraction features 9 studios and the award winning Barony Centre, an exhibition, activities and events venue. In this beautifully converted former church, visitors can see innovative exhibitions, choose from a range of exquisitely crafted objects and take part in creative activities. Additionally, they can stroll through our picturesque town, meet our makers in their craft workshops and visit the towns independent retailers, all located within easy walking distance of the town centre.

“Doing its Best”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

West Kilbride is an attractive wee place that is doing its best to thrive as a themed Craft Town. It has an old fashioned feel to it and a number of attractive buildings. It's a shame about Kirton Hall that is empty and deteriorating although photographs have been added to windows to make it look lived in. The Kirktonhall Glen has a fine ironwork entrance and a pleasant walk down beside the Kilbride Burn.

The jewel in the crown is the Barony Centre in the old church. This has an excellent exhibition hall which had a very high quality 'Raw Craft' on my visit and a good range of craft goods for sale. A bright and colourful cafe adds the final touch to attract tourists and locals.

The staff are very much volunteers and the centre will have to invest in training if they are to reach the average expectations of visitors.

“McHatties, open 6 days per week”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012

Beautiful designer yarn and craft shop. This shop used to be one of the small, local studios and has grown to be a joint venture including knitted and felted designs and silver jewellery. Everything is unusual and lovley. The yarns are scrumptious! I have also been on a couple of their workshops which are friendly, informative and for all levels.

The other main thing is that they are open earlier in the week than some of the other shops so worth a visit.

West Kilbride has several nice little cafes and other shops too. Well worth a trip!

“McHatties - a jewel of a shop!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012

McHatties is a little gem of a craft shop on Main Street, West Kilbride, selling beautiful yarns, unique hand-made bags and jewellery, and other enticing and irresistible items. Owned and staffed by friendly and experienced craftswomen, it offers workshops in knitting, crochet, felt-making and jewellery-making, and is the perfect place to find inspiration for your next project, or advice, or a unique present for someone special in your life - or for you (because you are special too).

I wouldn't visit West Kilbride without going to McHatties, and you shouldn't either!

“A little town with big ambitions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

A picturesque wee town, line with an eclectic collection of craft shops, ranging from a high end silversmith to the more 'hand-knitted'. Star of the show is the recently opened Barony centre, a stunning beautiful exhibition space and craft shop located in a former church. Best to go Fri - Sun.
