This was the first place on my mind when we planned our trip to Scotland.I myself found out about chapel as most of us through the DaVinci code, but forget about the book.Doesn't matter wether you believed every single word or thought it was rubbish,or never touched the book -the place is amazing anyway.
Try to arrive as early as you can to avoid the crowds. We drove and it took about 20 min from Edinburg. It might be difficult to locate it if you don't have sat nav so make sure you have clear directions before you go
I strongly suggest you take your time and sit down and listen to the guides, they do the talk every 15 min or so and it takes about 20 to 30 min.The history of the chapel is fascinating and you will learn a lot.Guides are realy knowlegable and speak with great humour too so it's not a boring lecture. You can get a guided tour with your ticket for even more information.
Some people are dissapointed because of the canape covering chapel but it serves a great purpose and will come off one day and guides will tell you all about it too,but whilst it's there you can use the unique opportunity to climb up and have a look at amazing exterior of chapel that you normaly wouldn't be able to see
