“erratic taste quality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013

As a family, we have twice visited The Paper Mill, and on both occasions have been pleased and disappointed by the food quality. On the most recent occasion, we all enjoyed our starters and desserts, but two out of the four of us took the iconic Paper Mill duck en croute, which was most disappointing: the duck was very underdone, which suits some but not all tastes, and tough; the pastry crust included pancetta, which left a lingering unpleasant taste in our mouths, vegetables that did not complement the duck and some unidentifiable (to us), spongy addition that we did not eat at all. Most of this dish was left on the plate. A pity. Perhaps the dish was overworked: it failed, for us at least. The setting and decor are very nice. Easy parking. Very pleasant service.

“For lunch, superb”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2013

Great value for lunch when you need something a bit better than a bite to eat. Worth leaving town for

“Lovely setting and interior but a few issues”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

Visited here as a couple and was recommended to try by a very good friend. We booked for a Friday evening and on arrival were impressed by the greeting and being shown to our table straight away. After ordering our drink we then reviewed the menu which I felt was exactly to our taste buds and ordered the charcuterie and the goats cheese for starters, steak and venison for main and then sat and took in the beautiful interior of the place. When the starters arrived they looked good and I tucked in only to be left slightly disappointed that the description of it said that there would be chutney and sliced pickles but on the wooden board all I had was 2 types of cured meat which for nearly £8 was slightly a bit of shock that for what was just Parma ham and pastrami with nothing else not very nice. No oil or dressing just meat. My partners dish was lovely and she really enjoyed it. I mentioned to the waiter that I felt the description of the dish was not as it came to which he replied that he would let the chef know.
About 20 minutes later our main course arrived which again looked lovely but both were cold so were sent back. About 5 minutes later the same 2 plates came back which had obviously just been put in the microwave to heat as the steak and venison both had the same bit missing with steam marks around the edge of the plate. The pastry that wrapped the venison had then gone gooey and soft and really quite not nice. I spoke to the waiter again who took the plate away only to come back with it and say that is how it's served. At this point I felt being charged £24 for something that was not nice was not going to be eaten by myself and advised the waiter of this. We then asked for the bill where we had been charged full price for both the main courses and asked the waiter why as I had not eaten my dish as it was not pleasant and been sent back twice. Our waiter apologised and said that we would have to pay for the food we ordered which did leave not a nice taste in my mouth. We were next to another tale of 16 people and they too were not very happy with the food they had been served and at this point they also complained. After negotiating with the waiter we agreed to pay 50% of the main course and promptly left.

I do feel that this place had so much to offer and started really well on first impression but left us never wanting to go back.

“Lovely decor but service needs to be sorted out”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

We dined as a group of 4 and we were looking forward to the evening. The restaurant is lovely inside and I found the menu to offer a reasonable selection. The place was packed and this is where the problems started.....our waitress was surly to say the least and she seemed to have difficultly in understanding exactly what we were ordering. We asked for the Chenin Blanc and was told it was a sweet wine ?? Since when ? We had to wait 45mins for our starters to arrive and when they did, the scallops which 2 of us had ordered, were disappointing. They had been cut either in half or by thirds and to only have 4 / 5 pieces on the plate was a bit of a rip off given the price. We then waited a further HOUR for the mains. During this time, the Maitre D arrived to say we could have a bottle of wine on the house given the wait, this was put down to the large party of 30 in the restaurant. Points have been added for this however if this info had been given to us at the start of the evening, the delays would`ve been forgiven and expected. The mains were fine, nothing out of the ordinary though. We had been advised by the Maitre D that the mains would be out in the next 3-5 mins, they took 15 ! He came back over once we had eaten them and also gave us desserts on the house for this further delay. Whilst it was a good offer to placate us, they really need to get their house in order in terms of better planning for larger parties so other diners dont suffer. We were split in our decision as to who would go back, for me personally, I would give it another try in the hope they were just having an off night.
