I stayed at the McLaren Hotel in early May 2007, with my wife and a party of approximately 45 people. We had booked months in advance for a weekend break and to do some hill walking, the hotel website gave a good impression, and as we had never been to Arran before, several of us booked an extra night. Arriving on a beautiful sunny day, the island looked great, that is the end of the good news.
It was immediately apparent that the hotel was not the cleanest place on the planet. On going to our room, we found it to be dingy and in need of a good clean. The decor was appalling with cracked and peeling paint and the en-suite shower and toilet were minute. Admittedly I'm 6'3" tall, but my knees almost went through the plaster wall when I went to the loo. All the furniture looked like it had been obtained from a house clearance sale. The carpets throughout were badly stained.
On going to Mac's Bar, it was full of what appeared to be workmen who obviously only know how to converse in the vernacular, I'm fairly broadminded, but I didn't want my wife staying and listening to all the effing and blinding that was going on. The first round of drinks I got was a joke, there were no half pint glasses, and one pint came with a free lipstick mark on it.
Despite the fact the hotel had known for many months that a large party were booked in, there was one member of staff behind the bar, so to get a drink you had to be very patient and/or pushy.
The chef had obviously been watching too much Gordon Ramsey and was heard effing and blinding about our group because someone had failed to select his/her evening meal. At the conclusion of each meal, we had to clear the table ourselves and pass all the crockery & cutlery down to the waitress, it was like being back at school.
Some members of our party arrived on the Thursday, the hotel had run out of the local Arran beers they got a delivery on Friday, but had run out again on Saturday. They could have gone next door to the co-op and bought gallons of it. They also ran out of white wine and wine glasses, and again half pint glasses were a rare commodity.
Although I actually enjoyed my meals, I know that many in our party made poor choices from the 3 options available each evening, the fish portions served on the Friday evening were minute.
Overall, the hotel was easily the worst I have ever stayed in, some of the staff did try, but I feel the problem is higher up the management scale, and I actually felt sorry for them having to work there and listen to the litany of complaints. We even discussed forfeiting our final night and going home early, a weekend we had looked forward to for many months was spoiled to a large extent due to the appaling way the hotel is run.
