McLaren Hotel

I stayed at the McLaren Hotel in early May 2007, with my wife and a party of approximately 45 people. We had booked months in advance for a weekend break and to do some hill walking, the hotel website gave a good impression, and as we had never been to Arran before, several of us booked an extra night. Arriving on a beautiful sunny day, the island looked great, that is the end of the good news.

It was immediately apparent that the hotel was not the cleanest place on the planet. On going to our room, we found it to be dingy and in need of a good clean. The decor was appalling with cracked and peeling paint and the en-suite shower and toilet were minute. Admittedly I'm 6'3" tall, but my knees almost went through the plaster wall when I went to the loo. All the furniture looked like it had been obtained from a house clearance sale. The carpets throughout were badly stained.

On going to Mac's Bar, it was full of what appeared to be workmen who obviously only know how to converse in the vernacular, I'm fairly broadminded, but I didn't want my wife staying and listening to all the effing and blinding that was going on. The first round of drinks I got was a joke, there were no half pint glasses, and one pint came with a free lipstick mark on it.

Despite the fact the hotel had known for many months that a large party were booked in, there was one member of staff behind the bar, so to get a drink you had to be very patient and/or pushy.

The chef had obviously been watching too much Gordon Ramsey and was heard effing and blinding about our group because someone had failed to select his/her evening meal. At the conclusion of each meal, we had to clear the table ourselves and pass all the crockery & cutlery down to the waitress, it was like being back at school.

Some members of our party arrived on the Thursday, the hotel had run out of the local Arran beers they got a delivery on Friday, but had run out again on Saturday. They could have gone next door to the co-op and bought gallons of it. They also ran out of white wine and wine glasses, and again half pint glasses were a rare commodity.

Although I actually enjoyed my meals, I know that many in our party made poor choices from the 3 options available each evening, the fish portions served on the Friday evening were minute.

Overall, the hotel was easily the worst I have ever stayed in, some of the staff did try, but I feel the problem is higher up the management scale, and I actually felt sorry for them having to work there and listen to the litany of complaints. We even discussed forfeiting our final night and going home early, a weekend we had looked forward to for many months was spoiled to a large extent due to the appaling way the hotel is run.

I stayed at the hotel in april 07 i found it to be a great hotel okay lets be honest the decor is dated but the rooms and overall hotel is very clean. The staff where supberb a little bit slow in serving the food but i think that was due to the fact that all the food was cooked from fresh, because the food was excelent i have stayed in the Dubai Hilton and i have to say it the food was not to compare with the mclaren hotel. My wife and I are sure to be returning to the hotel in the very near future.

We were unfortunate to have had to stay at this hovel for 2 nights in May 07 - what a beautiful looking island as you step off the ferry only to wish you had never thought about booking into the Mclaren Hotel or should it be referred to as the Mclaren HoStel??

I wonder what some people are used to being in a position to give this place a positive review. It should be condemned - No decor, FILTHY, torn bed sheets, hotch potch towels, no hot water, scummy bathrooms, ill fitting lino with holes as sharp as sharks teeth, broken windows, 60's style charity shop furniture, TV's from the dark age and to get a good steady picture you need to jump up and down on the bed, avoiding the springs coming through the mattress, and hope that you are jumping in time to the flicker!!!

Not only is the hotel a complete disgrace, it boasts its very own working mens club also known as Macs Bar. Again, you may well be unlucky enough to have a room above the DJ which doesn't stop until 1am

The staff were shocking - you had to pretty much clear your own plates away, the food was woeful and hygiene was poor.

When a complaint was made the owner did not want to know and threatened to call the poilice to stop us from leaving the island if we didn't pay our bill. A relaxing weekend was ruined by this place.

Please can somebody open a decent hotel........

When u speak of the McLaren you make it sound like a pig sty. Which it is not, i came to Arran to stay and didnt find it all bad, I was actually suprised, The staff are great, the food is incredible and the managaer is an extremely lovely lady. Dont listen to the ones who expect to much, at first i listened to the complaints and then i gave it a try, and i found it much better than any of your so called hotels that u pay that little bit extra and you dont get a smile so please try and you will c, its the best thing i done.

we have just returned from our overnight stay at the mclaren hotel
the staff couldnt have done any more for us, they went that "extra mile" to make sure our stay was most enjoyable
the service and food were second to none, we will certainly be returning to enjoy some more excellent hospitality in the near future
we will all be recommending the hotel to everyone who intends to visit arran in the future
thanks for a great stay, keep up the good work!
