“I'd rather rip my spleen out with a rusty hook than stay here again.”

What a dump!!, places like this are an embarrassment to Scotland and Arran. We were inmates here for a long weekend; fortunately we were released early for good behaviour.
First impressions are good with an idyllic spot on the bay, beer garden, bouncy castle and BBQ on the front lawn, but this elusion of loveliness is soon shattered.
The room/cell was in a block of sheds/portacabins stuck onto back of hotel, the cells were accessed via a corridor that smelt badly of oil or something mechanical, last time I smelt something of this nature was coming form the bilge of a boat. The view from the corridor window wasn’t any better, bags of rubbish etc. lying in courtyard off the kitchen, courtyard generally filthy and in need of a good clean. At night this corridor was in complete darkness, very difficult to find light switches, a case of feel around on the wall until you find something, not great if there had been a fire. Also in this corridor was the main electric cupboard, which had the door wide open for kids etc to play with!!
Once in side the room we found the following, window catches broken; cigarette burns on bed linen, the window looked out on to a messy back yard (different to courtyard mentioned above), recently used drainage rods (still connected together) were lying right outside the window, rats (probably trying to escape!!), were seen outside same window not surprising considering the last point!! Badly fitting lino in bathroom with 1" gap round edge, paint flaking off toilet seat with bare wood exposed and therefore unhygienic. Had to run around in shower to get wet.
A cooked breakfast was served up about 30 seconds after ordering and was of the temperature of molten lava, I suspect it had been cooked months in advance and the microwaved as required, the toast was served in a decorative basket complete with cotton cloth that had only slightly fewer stale crumbs than the carpet, which clearly hadn’t seen a hoover for some time and was filthy. The kitchen staff were obviously happy at there work and could clearly be heard cursing and swearing at one another.
If you’re on a stag weekend then this place is probably ideal but anything other than that, I'd suggest a rusty hook.

“sense of humor”

If the TV programs on how to improve the hotel/resturant food were only shown on the mainland then I would understand this hotel.
If only customer service was based on how people behaved in the 50's I would understand this hotel.
If only I had a sense of humor, I would like this place.
But back in the 21st century I would only say that you should shop around first. Maybe a tent would be a good place to start.

“Fab - maybe I don't get out much?”

Oh come on, I survived 4 days here - so am I a medical miracle? No!! Maybe a menu that Gordon Ramsay could improve with a few tweaks - but I didn't have a jippy tummy , maybe a Dyson imported from the mainland may be sound - but what are a few five year old dog hairs and pubes amongst friends? So the chairs sank into the front lawn but hey I'm short - and after the gorgeous Arran whiskey they were easier to extract myself from. Staff were fab - keep smiling guys - I'll come back any day :-)

“Made Fawlty Towers seem like Claridges”

The only way to keep your sanity in this truly dire hotel is to treat it as a joke and never, ever contemplate returning. It is an unrelentingly dreadful place where the poor standard of the rooms is surpassed only by the dinners which were re-heated from the 1970s.

“Awful hotel, avoid”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2006

I stayed in this hotel for a week in early 2006, and it was absolutely terrible. The rooms are cramped and in a poor state of repair. When I went to reception to report that the ceiling leaked I was told that there was nothing they could do and that I should expect that in an old building! I later found out that many other rooms had leaky ceilings, including some of the large dining rooms on the ground floor. Not only is this annoying and unhygienic, but also dangerous, since the ceilings are gradually being weakened by water damage. The swimming pool mentioned on the website and on the sign outside is not useable, but is covered in scum and locked up so guests cannot get to it. Staff were rude and dismissive, and attempted to leave me without food one night, when they claimed that I had not placed an order (which I had).
Drunken locals harassed other members of my party by following them up from the bar to their room, and hotel staff could not be found anywhere to step in and help.
I stayed in a quadruple room, and was given a bunk bed which had clearly been designed for children and which swayed worryingly when the person in the top bunk moved.
The only positive thing about the place is that the food was quite good, but don’t let that fool you into staying, this is a terrible hotel.
