“Short break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

Have just spent 2 nights in The Douglas Hotel on a short midweek break and had a great time. The Hotel was first class, I couldn't find any faults at all. The room was beautiful, situated at he back of the Hotel which was quiet and had a private terrace. We ate in the bar of the Hotel and the food was excellent. We will definitely pay a return visit and would like to stay a little longer.

Room Tip: Our room was at the back, would have preferred sea view, but Hotel was full. Didn't spoil the br...

We found all aspects of our stay at the Douglas to be excellent which is exceptional for a small independent hotel.
Room was fantastic - spacious spotless huge bed and home made shortbread
£99.50 dinner bed and breakfast great value mid week deal loved the choice of bistro menu or bar menu monetary allowance
Staff very busy so on occasion service not the quickest but always courteous and kept you updated. Great to see the manager manning desk, ironing, serving tables etc good morale and teamwork and everyone very professional for small establishment. Special mention. For the bar supervisor - working like a superhero at busy times!
Great comptemporary decor throughout
Good food not overpriced
A real gem around 100 yards from
The ferry

Beautiful hotel with wonderful decor. We enjoyed a thoroughly delicious lunch. The food was fresh and very tasty. In my opinion this is the best hotel/restaurant in Arran. Is in a different league to all of the other options. I would recommend this to families, romantic getaway couples and anyone looking for a really good meal out.

Stayed here for one night with my mother, short trip from Glasgow. We had a room each - I booked 2 executive rooms for luxury experience. My mother's room (104) was wonderful - on the front of the hotel, beautiful view of the bay, sofa you could sit in and gaze out the window, bathroom you could dance in (said my mother). Mine, 204 on the floor above, was perfectly nice but not as special. Partial view of the sea, smaller window, smaller room generally. Some executive rooms are more equal than others! We ate dinner in the restaurant and I can only repeat wht others have said about the quality of the food snd the friendliness of the service. Breakfast also very good with a buffet and cooked menu. Just some little things that annoyed us, mainly in the bathroom! The plugs in the sink / bath were a bit odd, and you had to pull them out with your hand. And the joint shower / bath taps were a bit awkwardly placed if you were standing having a shower. The Arran Aromatics toiletries were a nice touch but only in wall dispensers which were a bit awkward to use, especially in the bath. A bar of soap would be appreciated!

Room Tip: Room 104 - the best executive room!

Lovely hotel in a central location close to the ferry terminal. The room was spacious and decorated in an elegant and stylish way. The bistro food was excellent and reasonably priced. All staff were friendly and professional. I would recommend this hotel to families and couples. We were celebrating our anniversary and the hotel gave us a complimentary glass of champagne with our dinner which was a lovely touch.

I stayed four nights here for a wedding and loved it. The rooms were stylish and comfortable, with a very large bathroom.
The breakfast was very tasty and freshly made - I hate luke warm, buffet breakfasts. The view out of the front overlooks the sea and you can enjoy a drink on the terrace oustside.
The staff are friendly, helpful and efficient. It's located very close to the ferry pier, which is handy for arriving and leaving.
As for the wedding - I think I had the best wedding dinner I've ever had there. Normally it's fairly bland, luke warm fare - chicken in a tomato sauce or something. But the dinner here was hot and delicious - both the lamb and the chowder were delicious.
I'd definitely go back there.

We had a wonderful stay at the Douglas Hotel at Brodick on the Isle Arran. We splurged on a suite, room 103, and stayed for two nights and it was well worth it. A lovely spacious well appointed room with a view overlooking the bay and a distant view of Brodick Castle. My husband particularly enjoyed the freshly baked shortbread treats provided on the tea tray in our room. A full breakfast with local produce is included in the room tariff, and is a great start to the day. We also dined one evening in the restaurant, and my tip is to get a window seat in the smaller of the two dining rooms. My husband ordered the salmond and I enjoyed the beer battered pollock, served with chips served attractively in their own metal basket. Pollock is an interesting choice of fish to batter, but most delicious and served up with mushy peas. All up, the food is delicious and the service is friendly and professional.

The bathroom in our room was huge, and yet the shower was restricted to a small bathtub. I would just love to see a proper and luxurious shower recess with a drenching shower head. However, three cheers to the Douglas for their generous bath towels. How often do I enjoy a shower in an expensive hotel only to find a towel the size of a bath mat is provided? Also it was curious that the small safe was not secured into the cupboard - seriously funny that you could place your treasures in it and someone could just make off with the entire thing!

We are picnickers and come armed with foods and beverages, and it is inconvenient that there is no fridge in our room for our provisions. However the staff kindly offered to pop our pack into their kitchen fridge. My big tip is that two days is only just enough. Access to the Isle is a one hour car ferry trip which needs to be booked and planned in advance. There is lots to explore on the Island and a car is necessary to get about, importantly give yourselves plenty of time to enjoy the island. We visited a brewery, whisky distilery, golf course, cheese shop and the local fish shop where a local lobster was cooked, cleaned and shelled for collection a few hours later.

The golf course layout hugs the bay, and finishes with a challenging 220 yard par 3, 18th. Even if you don't play golf, an early morning walk around the course is most enjoyable.

While waiting for the return ferry journey, we enjoyed a scoop of delicious and memorable local strawberry ice cream!
